Job summary

The Government of Alberta invites applications for Park Caretaker at the Hidden Valley area of Cypress Hills this 2026–2027 ski season. The role includes cleaning facilities, safe operation of cleaning equipment, waste collection, and ensuring a positive visitor experience within the park.

Minimum education is high school level with related cleaning experience; certifications in First Aid/CPR and WHMIS are required.

Qualifications

  • Some high school education (high school diploma preferred) plus 6 months of related experience (cleaning/custodial).
  • Equivalences will be considered: one year of education for one year of experience or vice versa.
  • Current Intermediate Standard First Aid and CPR Level C/AED certificates are needed and must be maintained.
  • WHMIS 2015 certificate is required.
  • A valid Alberta Class 5 Driver's License or equivalent and driving record is needed.

Responsibilities

  • Clean facilities at Hidden Valley Ski Resort, main lodge, and rental building; may assist in other park buildings.
  • Operate cleaning appliances safely and use chemical cleaners following OHS procedures.
  • Daily collection of garbage and recycling.
  • Interact with the public in a professional manner to ensure a positive visitor experience.
  • Assist in other departments as needed.

Wage Benefits:
In addition to regular wages, regular Wage employees receive 11.6% in lieu of benefits and vacation leave:

  • 5.6 percent of regular wage earnings instead of paid holidays.
  • 6 percent of regular wage earnings instead of annual vacation pay.

In addition to the regular wages and the additional pay in lieu of benefits and vacation, regular wage employees are entitled to shift premium pay:

  • $3.25 per hour for weekends and holidays
  • $2.75 per hour for evenings

Role Responsibilities

The Hidden Valley Ski Resort in the South Region of Alberta Parks is looking for Park Caretakers for the 2026 - 2027 ski and snowboard season.

  • Cleaning of facilities at Hidden Valley Ski Resort, including the main lodge and the rental building; occasionally might be required to assist in cleaning of other buildings within the park.
  • Safe operation of cleaning appliances, use of chemical cleaners, lifting and carrying, while adhering to Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) practices and procedures.
  • Daily collection of garbage and recycling.
  • Interacting with the public in a professional manner and maintaining a positive visitor experience.
  • Assisting in other departments as needed.

This position primarily works indoors.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Some high school education (high school diploma preferred) plus 6 months of related experience (cleaning/custodial).
  • Equivalences will be considered: one year experience for one year of education OR one year of education for one year of experience.

Additional requirements include:

  • Prior to hire, recognized current Intermediate Standard First Aid and CPR Level “C”/AED Certificates are needed, and must be maintained as current for the entire period of hire by the employee.
  • WHMIS 2015 Certificate.
  • A valid Alberta Class 5 Driver s License or equivalent and Driver s Abstract.

Additional Assets to be successful in the role:

  • Good judgment and ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Physically fit as this is a physically demanding position.
  • Familiarity with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) practices, procedures and responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of Hidden Valley Ski Resort facilities and services.

Minimum recruitment standards outline the minimum education and experience required for appointment to a job classification.

Terms of employment:

  • Shifts are 7.25 hours a day, up to 36.25 hours a week.
  • Candidates must be willing to work evenings, weekends and holidays, varying start dates from November 25, 2026, until March 28, 2027, pending end of ski season and operational needs.
  • Multiple positions are available.
  • Various low-cost housing options are available for rent in Elkwater.
  • There is no public transportation to the Ski Resort. You must have reliable transportation to and from work. The Ski Resort is located about 10 minutes from Elkwater and about 40 minutes from Medicine Hat.

Any initial costs associated with obtaining required documents/checks as noted will be the responsibility of the candidate. However, some reimbursements may occur. Interview travel expenses will not be reimbursed. Out-of-province applicants can obtain the required documents/checks from the province they currently reside in.
