Our client is a well-respected criminal law firm in Calgary, committed to delivering exceptional legal services with a focus on professionalism, precision, and client care. The firm specializes in handling complex criminal cases while fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment for both clients and team members.

They are seeking a dedicated and experienced paralegal to join their team. This role offers an exciting opportunity for a professional with 3-5 years of experience in criminal law, preferably within a criminal law firm, to contribute significantly to their practice and client matters.

Role Overview

As a Paralegal, you will support the legal team across all aspects of criminal law practice. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, adaptable, and thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. Strong judgment, common sense, and proactive problem-solving skills are essential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage client files, gather documentation, and liaise with Crown Counsel, law firms, and community organizations for case management.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office 365, RCS, E-Disclosure, TMS, Adobe Reader, and other legal software.
  • Oversee case progression, obtain necessary documents, and manage the Early Case Resolution process.
  • Maintain the firm's calendar, schedule appointments and court dates, and organize files.
  • Assist with client intake, respond to inquiries, and handle routine and complex matters professionally.
  • Prepare for trial by ensuring all materials and documentation are ready.
  • Maintain and update the firm's website with accurate information and resources.
  • Ensure confidentiality and compliance with legal and ethical standards.
  • Assist lawyers with legal document preparation, including court filings and affidavits.
  • Schedule client meetings, coordinate availability, and organize case records.
  • Draft correspondence and communicate with clients and stakeholders efficiently.
  • Monitor deadlines and ensure timely submission of documents.
  • Perform administrative tasks such as invoicing, ordering supplies, and liaising with property management.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a recognized Legal Assistant, Paralegal, or Law Clerk program, preferably from SAIT.
  • 3-5 years of experience in criminal law, ideally in a sole practitioner firm.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple deadlines.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with keen attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and legal management software.
  • Familiarity with Alberta's legal system and criminal procedures is an asset.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
