Job summary

Alpha House Calgary is seeking a Relief Worker to join our front-line team in Calgary. The role focuses on providing a safe, caring environment for shelter and detox services, with admissions, safety monitoring, crisis response, and client advocacy.

The position requires a 2-year degree or diploma in social sciences, physical ability to lift up to 35 lbs, and obtaining required clearances and trainings. Overnight and weekend availability is mandatory, with opportunities for growth after 90 days.

Qualifications

  • A minimum 2-year degree or diploma in a social sciences discipline from a public institution (or in progress).
  • Physical ability to assist clients and lift items up to 35 lbs.
  • Ability to obtain a valid Vulnerable Sector Search (within the last six months).
  • Ability to obtain certifications such as FOIP and “It’s Your Move” (or equivalent Patient Lift training).

Responsibilities

  • Complete admissions and discharges for individuals under the influence of drugs and or alcohol.
  • Monitor client safety and well being, including withdrawal symptoms and overall condition.
  • Respond to crisis situations such as overdoses, seizures, and conflicts, with a focus on de escalation.
  • Interact with clients in a respectful, compassionate, and non-judgmental manner.
  • Provide information on treatment options and connect clients with appropriate resources.

Description
MUST be available to work overnights and weekends, and commit to at least 3 shifts per 30 day schedule period with one shift being overnight.

Pay:$20.20 per hour with a $2 premium for hours worked between 11pm and 7am

About the Role

As a Relief Worker, you will be a front-line team member helping provide a safe and caring environment for individuals accessing shelter and detox services. The primary responsibility is to ensure that client's needs are assessed and met appropriately while clients are visiting our shelter. Working in a fast paced, high impact environment, you will:

  • Complete admissions and discharges for individuals under the influence of drugs and or alcohol
  • Monitor client safety and well being, including withdrawal symptoms and overall condition
  • Respond to crisis situations such as overdoses, seizures, and conflicts, with a focus on de escalation
  • Interact with clients in a respectful, compassionate, and non-judgmental manner
  • Provide information on treatment options and connect clients with appropriate resources

After 90 days of supporting our Shelter and Detox, you can be trained and work on the HELP team and our Housing programs, as well as look into our full-time positions.

About You

The ideal candidate will demonstrate empathy, professionalism, and the ability to work effectively with vulnerable populations. You bring:

  • A non-judgmental approach, with a high degree of compassion and empathy.
  • Understanding of Housing First, harm reduction, and trauma-informed care philosophies.
  • Knowledge and awareness of community resources, social service programs, and housing systems within Calgary.
  • Strong crisis management, rapport-building, and advocacy skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and strong organizational abilities.
  • Experience with individuals who have addictions and or are homeless would be an asset
