Job summary

Taproot Community Support Services in Abbotsford is opening a new group home for two residents and is seeking an awake residential night worker to support health, safety and wellbeing overnight. The role operates solo at night with on-call support and requires careful adherence to policies and clinical directions.

The ideal candidate has Grade 12 plus a certificate or 6 months related experience, and current First Aid; basic sign language or alternative communication skills are valued to support

Qualifications

• WCB Occupational First Aid Level 1 or ability to obtain within probation.
• Experience with behaviour management and basic sign language or alternative communication.
• Ability to use common computer applications.

Responsibilities

• Monitors residents through the night and attends to medical and behavioural needs.
• Follows through on day staff directions for specific residents.
• Notifies staff of emergencies and responds per policy.
• Supports residents with morning and evening routines.
• Ensures residents follow house rules and curfew, reports as needed.
• Administers medications per policy and procedure.
• Keeps logbooks and charts complete; documents incidents.
• Light housekeeping and basic maintenance; reports issues.
• Follows agency policies and best practices; promotes resident safety.
• Secures building and assists with breakfast preparation.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

The Program

This October 2026 Taproot will be opening this new group home in the Abbotsford area. This home supports two (2) individuals with developmental disabilities. The Home Based Community Inclusion services are intended to ensure the persons serviced supported in the home receive the ongoing support they require to participate in the community in a meaningful way. Some of the activities may include all the residents of the home while other activities may require more of an individualized approach. These services are designed to support persons served to have rich lives within the community and any supports provided will take into consideration the persons served current behavioural, mental health and other disability-related needs, support preferences, and their goals.

The Position

The awake residential night worker (ARNW) for this licensed, accredited agency attends to the health, well-being, safety and security of residents and the program site at night, and provides general, non-specific services to clients as required. This position will be alone during the overnight hours and must feel comfortable working alone, with support from fellow team members and the On-Call Manager, as needed. Maintains a comfortable and clean living environment.

This position requires union membership with CUPE.

Scheduling

One (1) permanent full-time position working 40 hours per week :

• Monday through Friday, 2300-0700

In Your Role You Will

• Monitors residents through the night and attends to any medical and behavioural needs that arise during the night.
• Follows through on direction regarding specific residents left by the day staff.
• Notifies staff of any major problems or emergencies; responds to emergencies according to established policies and procedures.
• Supports residents with their morning and evening routines at the beginning and end of shift.
• Ensures residents follow house rules; monitors curfew regulations and reports to appropriate authorities as required.
• Administers medications to residents according to established policy and procedure.
• Ensures logbooks and other documentation such as charts and incident reports are complete.
• Manages light housekeeping duties such as vacuuming, dusting, emptying garbage, cleaning and laundry; performs minor building maintenance such as changing light bulbs; reports maintenance needs to the program manager.
• Complies with policies, procedures and values of the agency, and uses best practices when supporting residents.
• Utilizes practices that promote service recipient health, welfare, safety and security; secures the building by arming alarms and locking doors and windows.
• Prepares and assists residents in breakfast preparation.
• Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
• Prior to confirmation of employment, all applicants must provide a copy of a current Criminal Record Check and/or Government Screening Letter. These checks vary depending on province and sector and will be communicated by the Program Hiring Team.

As An Ideal Candidate You Possess

• Grade 12 education PLUS certificate, OR minimum of 6 months equivalent experience in related human/social service field
• Other combination of education and experience may be considered
• Current WCB Occupational First Aid, Level 1 (or ability to obtain within the probation period)
• Experience with behaviour management, basic sign language and/or alternative communications strategies training
• Ability to use common computer applications required (training provided)

Other Requirements

• Experience working with complex health (including personal hygiene and seizures) is preferred
