Position Description

The Non-Registered Technologist performs and is responsible for a variety of laboratory tests and procedures and acts in accordance with the mission, vision, values and goals of the Department of Paediatric Laboratory Medicine (DPLM) and those of the Hospital, under direct oversight of a CMLTO registered Medical Laboratory Technologist and/or Medical/Scientific staff.They will supportThey will support 24 hour / 7 days a week operationsworking all shifts on a rotational basis including weekends and holidays as scheduled. The Non-Registered Technologist will work in TDM/Toxicology/Special Chemistrywithin the Division of Biochemistry.

The Department of Paediatric Laboratory Medicine (DPLM) at SickKids is a leading, world-class facility working towards reducing the impact of childhood illness by providing diagnostic information that allows for early selection of best treatment options. DPLM is a valuable and integral part of the SickKids team, generating original research and providing timely, specialized diagnostic services for health care providers in Canada and around the world. The department comprises of five divisions: Clinical Biochemistry, Genome Diagnostics, Haematopathology, Microbiology, and Pathology. All DPLM laboratories are accredited by Accreditation Canada Diagnostics.

Here's What You'll Get To Do

  • Strictly follow standard operating procedures
  • Rotate through all areas of the laboratory as assigned
  • Prioritizes own workload to ensure efficiency and timely results
  • Operates and maintains laboratory equipment
  • Prepare and issue of samples/product/specimen
  • Maintain accurate laboratory records and records of testing
  • Practice and perform a variety of laboratory tests and procedures with accurately and precisely within defined time expectations (TATs)
  • Recognize failure, troubleshoot, take remedial action, and document action, within their scope of practice, as required
  • Report failures, issues & action taken to immediate supervisor
  • Assess results against diagnosis to ensure relevant results correspond with known patient data, as appropriate
  • Recognize abnormal and critical results, and takes appropriate actions according to the established SOP, as required
  • Follow inventory control system and communicate status to ensure availability of adequate reagents and supplies
  • Participate in the development, implementation and support of the policies, processes and procedures within the Quality System to support the effective operation of DPLM
  • Follow health and safety procedures as per DPLM and Hospital guidelines
  • Understands the practice and theory of quality control (discipline specific) in Laboratory Medicine
  • Perform quality control and documents control results
  • Review and monitor daily QC results
  • Recognize unusual quality control results, take remedial action and document outcome
  • Report ongoing or unresolved QC issues to immediate supervisor

  • Bachelor of Science and/or diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology.
  • Bachelor of Science MLS or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated intent to become registered with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) as a Medical Lab Technologist.
  • Relevant special technical skills.
  • Demonstrated troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated customer service orientation and ability to relate well to others.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work well under pressure and prioritize.
  • Critical thinking skills, highly accurate.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, written and oral.
  • Demonstrated ability to be self-directed and adaptable to new technologies and processes.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to make decisions based on knowledge and experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment and actions in advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion objectives.
  • Experience with paediatrics is an asset.
  • Previous job-related experience required: Laboratory Technologist or technician experience an asset.
