Job summary

Lumentum is seeking an enthusiastic Optical Verification Engineer (Co-op/Intern) to join the R&D Design Verification and Characterization team in Ottawa, Ontario, onsite. This 8- or 12-month co-op offers hands-on experience in photonics, test automation, and data-driven validation of critical product features.

You'll develop automated test scripts, analyze optical, hardware, and software failures, and collaborate with senior engineers to advance test coverage and reliability.

Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled full-time or part-time in a Canadian post-secondary institution.
  • Experience with optical technologies or labs is preferred.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Proficient in Python data analysis and script development.

Responsibilities

  • Develop automated tests and scripts for optical verification.
  • Analyze optical, hardware and software failures.
  • Design and execute test cases to validate product features.
  • Expand automated test software to improve coverage and results.
  • Collaborate with engineers on test methodologies.

Lumentum is seeking an enthusiastic and innovative Optical Verification Engineer (Co-op/Intern) to join the R&D Design Verification and Characterization (DVaC) team in the Applied Photonics Solutions Department based in Ottawa, Ontario.

The Opportunity
  • 8-month term (preferred): Jan 2027 to September 2027
  • 12-month term: Jan 2027 to December 2027
  • Pay range: $24-35/hr
What You’ll Be Doing

Do you enjoy having autonomy and independence in tasks, while also collaboratively contributing to novel, cutting-edge products in the photonics and optical communications industries?

  • Employing theoretical concepts and principles from optics & photonics in practice, to improve the robustness of our test & measurement techniques.
  • Sharing your advanced knowledge of optical technologies with the team to further team growth.
  • Developing automated test software and scripts
  • Analyzing optical, hardware, and software failures
  • Designing and conducting test cases to properly validate the operation of critical product features.
  • Implementing and expanding upon automated test software and scripts that improve our test coverage as well as the quality of our results.
  • Analyzing and characterizing optical, hardware and software failures and reporting them to relevant designers using our internal process and tools
What We’re Looking For
  • Data analysis using Python (NumPy, Pandas, SciPy) or similar tools.
  • Experience with machine learning or statistical modeling applied to real-world datasets is an asset.
  • Demonstrated technical expertise in active optical & electromagnetic components.
  • Ability to take initiative in your tasks and ask meaningful questions.
  • Team guidance skills.
  • Strong, persistent troubleshooting and debugging skills.
  • Good understanding of test plans, test execution, and bug reporting.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with optical lab practices is an asset.
  • 2+ years towards a degree in Computer/Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics or equivalent.
