Job summary

Lumentum Ottawa is seeking a Mechanical Engineering Co-op Student (onsite) for 8–12 months starting January 2027. You will support the mechanical engineering team on ongoing projects, gaining hands-on experience in design, thermal and vibration testing, and prototyping.

The role offers exposure to opto-mechanical design for data centers and telecommunications, with collaboration across engineering disciplines and opportunities to develop CAD models, analyses, and documentation.

Qualifications

• Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
• Completion of at least 2nd or 3rd year of study preferred.
• Strong understanding of mechanical design principles.
• Experience with CAD tools.
• Ability to manage time effectively and work independently.
• Excellent communication, technical report writing and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

• Create and modify 3D models of mechanical parts and assemblies using CAD software.
• Support the development and validation of thermal management solutions for telecom systems.
• Development and testing of prototypes for durability and compliance with industry standards.
• Dynamic analysis and testing of systems exposed to shock and vibration based on industry standards.
• Create and revise engineering drawings, BOMs, and technical documentation.
• Prepare engineering calculations, reports, and presentations.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional teams including electrical engineers, manufacturing engineers, and project managers.

The Opportunity

• Duration: 8 – 12 months starting January 2027


• Pay Range: $24-35/hr

What You’ll Be Doing

• Create and modify 3D models of mechanical parts and assemblies using CAD software.

• Exposure to FEA/CFD analysis (Ansys, Icepak).


• Familiarity with manufacturing processes (e.g. machining, sheet metal fabrication, 3D printing).
