Job summary

Nokia Ottawa is seeking an Optical Test Coop/Intern to gain hands-on experience with optical transceiver hardware and Python automation. You will participate in ODVT/OIT activities, enhance test frameworks, and apply AI tools to speed up development and analysis.

Ideal candidates are pursuing a Bachelor's in Electrical & Computer Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Software Engineering, with strong Python skills and lab-instrument experience, plus solid communication for team collaboration.

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Electrical & Computer Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering or related field.
  • Strong Python programming skills with clean, modular code.
  • Hands-on experience with lab instruments and hardware interfacing.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Proactive ownership of technical tasks and projects.

Responsibilities

  • Implement ODVT and Optical Integration activities.
  • Improve and extend Python-based test automation frameworks.
  • Apply AI tools to accelerate automation development and testing.
  • Interface with optical test hardware and instruments.
  • Develop workflow automation for test pipelines and reporting.
  • Investigate failures and perform root-cause analysis.

Position: Optical Test Coop/Intern

EDUCATIONAL RECOMMENDATIONS Currently a candidate for a Bachelor's degree in Electrical & Computer Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related field with an accredited institution.

How You Will Contribute And What You Will Learn
  • Implement and execute ODVT & OIT (Optical Integration) activities
  • Improve and extend Python-based test automation frameworks used for validating optical transceiver hardware and system-level performance.
  • Apply AI tools (e.g., Cursor AI, GitHub Copilot, LLM-based agents) to accelerate automation development, code review, and test result analysis.
  • Interface directly with optical test hardware — including instruments such as optical spectrum analyzers, tunable lasers, variable optical attenuators, and high-speed bit-error-rate testers.
  • Develop and enhance workflow automation for test execution pipelines, data collection, and reporting.
  • Investigate test failures and anomalies, performing root cause analysis on both software and hardware layers.
Key Skills And Experience

You Have:

  • Hands on experience in general lab instruments
  • Strong programming skills in Python, including writing clean, modular, and maintainable code.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify root causes and develop effective solutions.
  • Ability to work through complex technical challenges in a systematic manner.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated persistence, initiative, and ownership when working on technical projects.
Really Nice to have
  • Experience with test automation frameworks such as PyTest or Robot Framework.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD tools and automated testing environments.
  • Experience using AI-assisted coding tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor AI, or ChatGPT.
  • Exposure to hardware interfaces and instrument communication protocols such as Serial, GPIB, or SCPI.
  • Familiarity with Git, Jira, Confluence, or similar development tools.
  • Coursework or project experience in signal processing, communications, optical networking, or photonic systems.
  • Experience with Python data analysis libraries including pandas, NumPy, and matplotlib.
  • Basic understanding of optical networking technologies and transceiver validation processes.
