Position Overview

The incumbent books appointments and surgery, coordinates pre-op testing, types reports, maintains filing system, records and compiles and reports statistics. Greets and directs patients. Provides basic patient education.Triages referrals and phone calls. It is essential that the incumbent has the ability to work on multiple tasks and interact with patients in person and on the phone simultaneously. Performs a variety of Ophthalmological tests as required.

Experience
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in the last five (5) years in a clerical ophthalmology position required.
  • Recent experience with clinical optics, ocular motility, visual field testing, and ocular pharmacology is required.
  • Experience showcase good understanding of medical terminology is required.
  • Experience with physician billing is required.
  • Demonstrated experience showcasing excellent verbal and written communication skills is required; including excellent customer service experience, being comfortable talking to patients to fact find and make patients feel comfortable talking to you.
  • Experience with prioritizing multiple activities in a busy clinical environment is required.
  • Experiencing functioning as a team player is required.
Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)
  • Grade 12.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in computer skills.
  • Knowledge of Novari/Accuro electronic medical record systems is required.
  • Medical terminology, especially ophthalmic terminology is required.
  • Successful completion of the COA (Certified Ophthalmic Assistant) or an Ophthalmic Assistant certification (institutional or Home Study), recognized by the Joint Commission on Allied Personnel in Ophthalmology (J.C.A.H.P.O.) is required or must be attained within one year of hire.
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training requirements for this position shall be in accordance with the Employer policy.

  • Knowledge of the English language consistent with ease of communication, both oral and written required.
  • Works within MHC’s core values, philosophy, vision, CQI goals, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to function as an effective member of an interdisciplinary team, including collaboration, teamwork and good communication skills.
Physical Requirements
  • Physical health to meet the requirements of the position.

This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred. A security check is considered current if it was obtained no more than six (6) months prior to the start of employment.
