Job summary

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management, Human Resources or equivalent with at least five years of direct experience creating and implementing a training program.
  • Preference for Provincial Instructor’s Diploma (PID), technical skill instruction experience and/or professional designation.
  • Experience with online learning tools and technology to successfully deliver training in-person and online.
  • Strong understanding of adult learners and varied learning styles.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, research, analytical and organizational skills.
  • Excellent relationship skills and knowledge of airport business partners, operations, processes and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct training sessions in multiple formats (online, in-class, in-terminal, and airside) adaptable to shifts.
  • Develop on-the-job training, mentoring and evaluation structure for trainers and trainees.
  • Create and design course curriculum content with L&D to ensure staff are knowledgeable and capable.

Position Overview

We have an opportunity for a permanent, full‑time Operations Training Specialist and Curriculum Developer in the Airport Operations Department. Reporting to the Manager, Operations, the specialist will develop course curriculum, plans and deliver practical and theoretical training for YVR employees in a variety of roles, including Airport Operations Dispatchers, Terminal Duty Officers, Baggage & Gate Schedulers, Emergency Planning, Operations Centre Managers and other airport staff as required. This includes developing training modules that can be delivered in person or online, researching training best practices and incorporating that research, writing, and editing onto lesson plans and training materials. The role will require ongoing assessment to ensure training is up‑to‑date and relevant for the changing nature of the operation as well as defining learning objectives and technical skill competency. Additionally, ongoing training needs assessment, incorporating feedback from other business units and continuous program improvements will be required.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct training sessions in the appropriate format for the learner and subject matter, which includes online, in‑class, in‑terminal, and airside (adaptable to a shift environment).
  • Develop on‑the‑job training, mentoring and evaluation structure for trainers and trainees.
  • Develop and design course curriculum content in partnership with L&D Learning Designers and ensure implementation processes so that staff in each department are knowledgeable and able to deliver exceptional work.
  • Write lessons and training plans using learning objectives and evaluations, and develop and consistently apply tools for evaluating training, skill and competency effectiveness.
  • Gather and apply feedback from staff and teams, and incorporate new information to ensure training delivered is relevant, engaging and current.
  • Be responsible for the initial, recurring and ongoing training relevant to the applicable job for five different positions: Airport Operations Dispatcher, Terminal Duty Officers, Baggage & Gate Schedulers, Emergency Planning and Operations Centre Manager.
  • Occasionally present training content and facilitate workshops, information sessions and group discussions for employees and stakeholders, demonstrating strong public speaking, presentation and audience engagement skills.
Key Qualifications
  • Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management, Human Resources or equivalent education and experience in adult training and facilitation with at least five years of direct experience creating and implementing a training program.
  • Preference for those with a Provincial Instructor’s Diploma (PID), technical skill instruction experience and/or professional designation.
  • Experience with online learning tools and technology to successfully deliver training in‑person and online.
  • Strong understanding of the needs and styles of adult learners, along with an empathetic awareness of various learning styles and learning methodologies.
  • Exceptional communication (listening, writing, speaking), presentation, research, analytical and organizational skills.
  • Excellent relationship skills, knowledge of airport business partners, operations, processes and procedures.

Although not required, French language skills are an asset as we are committed to providing bilingual services to our visitors and passengers. Candidates who do not speak French are still strongly encouraged to apply.

While we value flexibility, this role may require occasional shift work to support shadowing and hands‑on learning within operational areas. This experience will help the successful candidate build a strong understanding of the roles and subject matter they will be responsible for training.

Salary Range: $75,766 to $99,027 per annum, based on a 37.5‑hour work week. This is individually tailored to reflect your unique experience, qualifications and internal equity.
