About IESO

The Independent Electricity System Operator, or IESO, is a government agency in Ontario responsible for managing the province’s electricity system. It ensures that supply and demand for electricity are balanced in real time and that the power grid operates reliably and efficiently. The IESO also runs Ontario’s electricity market, where electricity is bought and sold, and helps plan for the province’s long-term energy needs. This includes forecasting electricity demand,

acquiring new energy resources, and integrating renewable energy and emerging technologies into the grid. The organization works with a wide range of stakeholders, including utilities, energy companies, municipalities, and Indigenous communities, to support a reliable, sustainable, and affordable electricity system. The IESO is headquartered in Toronto and plays a key role in shaping Ontario’s energy future.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead in-depth studies and projects analyzing Ontario electricity market trends and emerging issues.
  • Evaluate and conduct cost–benefit analyses of market rule changes and system design impacts.
  • Develop, maintain, and recommend improvements to analytical tools for market simulations.
  • Prepare reports, technical recommendations, and presentations.
  • Coordinate and lead stakeholder consultations, public engagements, and rule amendment processes.
  • Mentor and guide internal staff on using and interpreting analytical insights.

Qualifications & Skills Required

  • A degree in business, engineering, economics, or a related field.
  • 8–10 years’ relevant experience in utility markets, market design, economic analysis, or policies in Canada
  • Strong analytical capabilities: cost-benefit modeling, quantitative studies, data synthesis.
  • Familiarity with Ontario IESO market rules, structures, and interconnected jurisdictions.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication; proven stakeholder and project management skills.
  • Proficiency in market analysis tools, Excel, and reporting software.
