Job description

The swiya of the shíshálh people lies between Queens Reach in Jervis Inlet and Howe Sound on the south coast of British Columbia. Historically, there were four main settlements at kalpilin (Pender Harbour), ts’unay (Deserted Bay), xenichen (Jervis Inlet), and tewankw near Porpoise Bay.

shíshálh Nation is committed to innovation in program and service delivery designed to assist our members and community to achieve greater independence, wellness, and self-sufficiency. Foundational to our shared work is the protection, promotion, and practice of shíshálh culture, language, and laws within our swiya.

Position Overview:

The One-to-One Child Support Worker position in the Summer Fun program offers an opportunity to assist Nation children (ages 5 and up) in accessing and participating in the program, providing positive mentorship and support. The one-to-one ratio allows for a specialized focus on each child's needs, abilities, and goals. Children supported by this position are identified through their collaborative support team, involving their caregivers, Education, and CMS support personnel.

This position will be managed by the Wellness Centre and Education Manager and supervised by the Child Wellness Coordinator and other program leads. The Worker will serve as a caring presence in the child's life, making themselves available to listen, support, and engage with the children they support in a healthy manner.

Duration and Hours: The position runs from June 23, 2025, to August 29, 2025. Hours are from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

Candidate Responsibilities:
  1. Provide direct, one-to-one service support to children participating in the Summer Fun program.
  2. Utilize and inform the child's Behaviour Support Plan to understand their needs, abilities, and goals, supporting their participation in the program.
  3. Collaborate with Wellness Centre and Education staff to deliver activities and provide necessary adaptations.
  4. Ensure the child's safe participation in activities, providing alternative supported activities as needed.
  5. Act as a caring mentor, listening to needs, supporting activity completion, and following safety protocols.
  6. Maintain regular communication with the Wellness Centre and Education teams regarding feedback, concerns, or support requests.
  7. Attend team meetings as required.
  8. Perform other related tasks within the scope of the position.
Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities:
  1. Minimum age of 18 at the time of application.
  2. Willingness and ability to pass a criminal record check.
  3. Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities, physical disabilities, mental health concerns, and behaviors.
  4. Understanding of the needs and barriers faced by individuals with various abilities.
  5. First Aid Certification.
  6. Positive Behaviour Management Training (training will be provided).
  7. Experience working with children in recreation or educational settings is an asset.
  8. Availability to work Monday through Friday, with occasional extended hours for off-coast trips.
