Job summary

Seabird Island Band is seeking an On-Call Education Assistant to support student learning, wellbeing, and success at Lalme' Lwesawtexw Community School in Agassiz, BC. The role involves working with the Principal and teachers to deliver academic and life-skills assistance while honoring First Nations values and language.

You will collaborate with families and support professionals, help implement IEPs, and participate in school and community events.

Qualifications

• Education assistant certificate required or equivalent training.
• Experience in First Nations/Indigenous education setting is an asset.

Responsibilities

About the Role

Seabird Island is seeking a compassionate and dedicated On-Call Education Assistant to support student learning, wellbeing, and success in a culturally safe and inclusive school environment. Working under the direction of the Principal and alongside teachers, you will provide academic, social, and life skills support to students while helping foster a classroom environment that honours First Nations values, traditions, and ways of knowing. This role involves working directly with students, supporting individualized learning plans, collaborating with families and support professionals, and participating in school and community events.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide classroom support to students in academic, social, and life skills development.
• Assist teachers with implementing learning activities and individualized education plans (IEPs).
• Support students one-on-one and in small group learning environments.
• Monitor, document, and report on student progress and learning outcomes.
• Prepare and organize educational materials and resources.
• Collaborate with teachers, families, healthcare professionals, and support staff.
• Assist with classroom management and student supervision both indoors and outdoors.
• Participate in school events, cultural activities, staff meetings, and community engagements.
• Promote and support First Nations culture, values, and language within the learning environment.
• Help create a safe, inclusive, and culturally responsive classroom environment.
• Maintain required certifications, training, and clear criminal record checks.
• Perform other related duties as assigned to support students, the school, and the community.

About You

You are a caring, patient, and collaborative professional who is passionate about supporting student growth and creating positive learning experiences. You have an Education Assistant Certificate (or equivalent relevant training), strong communication skills, and the ability to build respectful relationships with students, families, and colleagues. Experience working in a First Nations or Indigenous educational setting is an asset. You are committed to cultural learning, teamwork, and contributing to a supportive school community.

Qualifications & Experience

• Education assistant Certificate required. Other forms of post-secondary education and training, including teachings from Elders and Knowledge Keepers, will be considered.
• Experience working within a first nations community in an education environment is considered an asset.
• Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
• Willingness to work collaboratively with staff, parents, and administration.
• Willingness to contribute to a positive school culture by volunteering in extracurricular activities.
• Ability to maintain positive, supportive, and professional relationships with students
