Job summary

WSP in Canada is seeking a Geotechnical Field Technician to support a major oil sands program in Fort McMurray. The role operates on a two-weeks-in/two-weeks-out rotation, with flights and oil sands camp accommodation provided from Calgary, Edmonton, or Fort McMurray.

You will perform field investigations, construction monitoring, and geotechnical instrumentation while coordinating with engineers and contractors. Valid Alberta license and English communication are required.

Qualifications

• Diploma or degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering, or Geotechnical Engineering.
• Experience with geotechnical field investigations and construction monitoring.
• Knowledge of soil classification and subgrade evaluation.
• Experience with instrumentation and data loggers.
• Ability to communicate in English with engineers and clients.
• Valid Alberta driver's licence and willingness for fly-in/fly-out rotation.

Responsibilities

• Promote a strong safety culture by following site-specific health, safety, and environmental requirements throughout field activities.
• Deliver construction monitoring, subgrade evaluation, Portable Nuclear Gauge testing, soil-property verification, and clear reporting that guide safe construction decisions.
• Monitor geotechnical drilling investigations using auger, sonic, mud rotary, cone penetration testing, and specialty techniques while classifying samples and completing soil and groundwater testing.
• Install, commission, maintain, and troubleshoot vibrating wire and standpipe piezometers, in-place and slope inclinometers, ShapeAccelArrays, monitoring wells, data loggers, telemetry networks, and remote monitoring systems.
• Coordinate field records, automated monitoring data, contractors, laboratory and field-testing programs, and written or verbal communication with engineers, clients, and construction teams.
• Help deliver a landmark multi-year oil sands program.

We are proactively inviting applications for a Geotechnical Field Technician in anticipation of a major, long-term oil sands program in Fort McMurray, expected to begin in Q4 2026 and continue for approximately five years. Working on a two-weeks-in / two-weeks-out fly-in / fly-out rotation, you will support critical field investigations, construction monitoring, and geotechnical instrumentation that enable safe, informed project delivery. Flights and oil sands camp accommodation are provided, with travel originating from Calgary, Edmonton, or Fort McMurray.

The Skills That Set You Apart

• Diploma or degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related discipline.
• Practical capability supporting drilling programs, soil sampling, test pits, geotechnical field investigations, construction monitoring, and soil or groundwater testing.
• Knowledge of soil classification, subgrade evaluation, foundation preparation, field documentation, and quality-focused construction practices.
• Experience with geotechnical instrumentation, data loggers, telemetry, remote monitoring systems, field data collection, and technical reporting tools.
• Ability to coordinate contractors, maintain accurate records, communicate technical findings in English, and work with limited day-to-day supervision in an active field environment.
• Valid Alberta driver's licence and ability to work safely in a fly-in / fly-out oil sands camp on a two-weeks-in / two-weeks-out rotation.

• AB, BC, NT, NU, SK & YT: $32.20-43.30
• MB & ON: $29.40 - $41.00
• NB, NL, NS, PEI & QC: $29.10 - $39.20
