Job summary

Metric’s Occupational Health & Safety Manager will lead the Health & Safety Program across multiple civil construction projects, supporting crews, project managers, and leadership to maintain compliance and strengthen safety culture so everyone goes home safe.

You will conduct inspections, audits, and incident investigations, manage Salus documentation, develop PSSPs, deliver training, and champion a proactive, on-site safety mindset on every active site in BC.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of safety leadership in civil construction.
  • Strong knowledge of WorkSafeBC regulations and COR requirements.
  • CSO (NCSO) and CRSP certifications with OFA Level 1 or higher.
  • COR Internal Auditor certification or ability to obtain.
  • Effective communication with field crews, project management, and clients.
  • Proactive safety approach and incident investigation experience.
  • Experience with risk assessment, safety program development, and training.
  • Proficient with Salus or similar safety management platforms.
  • Class 5 driver’s license with a clean abstract; travel to active sites.

Responsibilities

  • Lead Health and Safety Program; ensure compliance with WorkSafeBC, COR, and company standards.
  • Conduct inspections, audits, and risk assessments to identify hazards and address them.
  • Oversee Salus: inspections, incidents, and corrective actions.
  • Develop and maintain Project-Specific Safety Plans (PSSPs) and ensure documentation.
  • Deliver orientations and toolbox talks; train employees and subcontractors.
  • Chair the Joint OH&S Committee; promote safety communication across field and leadership.
  • Lead investigations of incidents and near misses; implement corrective actions.
  • Coordinate safety planning with project teams; participate in start-ups and site visits.
  • Report safety metrics to management and maintain documentation.

About the Role

As Metric’s Occupational Health & Safety Manager, you will lead our Health & Safety Program across multiple civil construction projects. You’ll support crews, project managers, and leadership to maintain compliance, strengthen our safety culture, and ensure everyone goes home safe at the end of the day.

Safety Leadership & Compliance
  • - Lead Metric’s Health and Safety Program, ensuring compliance with WorkSafeBC, COR, and company standards
  • - Act as the primary contact for all safety-related matters across projects
  • - Conduct regular inspections, audits, and risk assessments to identify and address hazards
  • - Oversee Salus, ensuring inspections, incidents, and corrective actions are documented
  • - Develop and maintain Project-Specific Safety Plans (PSSPs) and ensure all safety documentation is complete
Training & Communication
  • - Deliver orientations, toolbox talks, and safety training for employees and subcontractors
  • - Chair the Joint Occupational Health & Safety Committee, promoting communication between field and leadership
  • - Promote a strong safety culture through mentorship, coaching, and consistent presence on-site
  • - Ensure certifications and training records are current and documented
Incident Management
  • - Lead investigations of incidents, near misses, and safety violations
  • - Identify root causes, ensure corrective actions are implemented, and manage reporting to WorkSafeBC and other authorities
  • - Track and analyze safety metrics and trends, provide recommendations to management
  • - Support injury management and return-to-work programs in coordination with WCB and HR
Project Coordination
  • - Work closely with project teams to integrate safety planning and risk management
  • - Participate in project start-ups, pre-construction meetings, and site visits to ensure safety expectations are clear and consistent

What We Need From You

Working Conditions
Site-Based Role
  • - Primarily based on active civil construction sites with exposure to noise, dust, heavy equipment, uneven ground, and changing weather. Regular attendance will also be required at head office in Chilliwack, BC. This is not a work from home position.
Physical Demands
  • - Regular walking, standing, and climbing on-site; occasional lifting of safety gear or materials (up to 25 lbs).
Outdoor Work
  • - Year-round field work in all weather conditions; PPE required at all times.
Flexible Hours
  • - Hours vary by project. Early starts, late finishes, or occasional weekend work may be required for inspections or incident response.
Active Environment
  • - Must stay alert to equipment movement and site activity to maintain safety awareness.
Communication
  • - Frequent interaction with field teams, supervisors, subcontractors, and management. Requires a calm, consistent, and approachable leadership style.
Reporting
  • - Regular use of Salus and digital tools for inspections, documentation, and incident reporting.
