Job summary

Boyle Street Community Services in Edmonton seeks an Occupational Therapist to join the interdisciplinary team and support adult community members with trauma-informed care and harm reduction.

This role involves supervising OT student placements, coordinating with University of Alberta partners, and leading groups to promote life skills, housing goals, and well‑being. Collaborative outreach and cultural knowledge are valued.

Qualifications

• Registration with the Alberta College of Occupational Therapists is required.
• Minimum of 1 year of experience as an Occupational Therapist and 1 year supporting vulnerable populations.
• Experience with mental health challenges and/or concurrent disorders.

Responsibilities

• Conduct occupational therapy assessments, develop care plans, and monitor client progress toward individual goals.
• Develop and lead regular groups focusing on life skills, independence, vocation and well-being.
• Support clients in navigating healthcare, housing, income support, and community services.

Job description

Reports To: Interdisciplinary Team Manager

The Occupational Therapist is a key team member of the Interdisciplinary Team working out of okimaw peyesew kamik, alongside a nurse, support worker, cultural and substance use workers.The Occupational therapist provides direct client-centered, trauma-informed care to adult community members by assessing occupational needs, supporting health and housing goals, coordinating with healthcare and community partners, and promoting harm reduction practices.

This role is in partnership with the University of Alberta, with one-day a week dedicated to the goals of this partnership. This includes supervising OT student placements at Boyle Street across various programs, relationship-building with other inner-city agencies to support in the coordination of other community-based fieldwork and capstone placements, and may include supporting the delivery of occasional seminars to students.

Position Responsibilities

Boyle Street and Interdisciplinary Team (3-days-week)

• Conduct occupational therapy assessments, develop care plans, and monitor client progress toward individual goals.
• Develop and lead regular groups to clients of the interdisciplinary program that focus on: life skills, independence, access to vocation and leisure, and overall well-being and quality of life.
• Support clients in navigating healthcare, housing, income support, and other community services.
• Provide trauma-informed, harm reduction-focused care and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure holistic client support.
• Maintain accurate client documentation and uphold professional occupational therapy standards through ongoing learning.
• All staff at BSCS are expected to participate in occasional outreach and emergency response efforts (e.g., winter response) to support and engage with clients.
• BSCS is more than a workplace. It is a community where everyone helps and contributes to the whole, and there is an expectation that all employees will take part in events (during the work week and occasionally during weekends and evenings). This includes fundraising campaigns, running community meals, medicine picking etc.

University of Alberta (1 day-week)

• Mentor and supervise University of Alberta Occupational Therapy students on-site for Boyle Street placements
• Build and maintain relationships with other inner-city agencies to recommend and support the University in coordinating other student field-placements
• Support with the delivery of student seminars (on occasion)
• Maintain regular communication with the University of Alberta representatives

Qualifications

• Registration with the Alberta College of Occupational Therapists.
• Minimum of 1 year of experience as an Occupational Therapist and 1 year supporting vulnerable populations.
• Experience supporting individuals with mental health challenges and/or concurrent disorders.
• Current Alberta Aids to Daily Living (AADL) Authorizer status is considered an asset.
• Knowledge of trauma-informed care and harm reduction principles.
• Strong clinical judgment, organizational skills, and proficiency with Microsoft Office.
• Ability to navigate and coordinate community resources.
• Experience with and knowledge of Indigenous culture and ceremonies is considered an asset.
• Valid First Aid certificate or enrolled in a future course
• Police Check with the Vulnerable Sector completed within the past six months and kept up to date (every 3 years)
• Child and Youth Intervention Check completed within the past six months and kept up to date (every 3 years)
