Duties

As a member of the Hepatology clinic, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) functions in an expanded role demonstrating a high level of autonomy and expert skill to manage the care required for hepatology patients. Key responsibilities include: primary clinician in the clinic with main focus on patients with advanced liver disease. The Hepatology NP will provide comprehensive care to liver patients of different disease etiologies using a holistic approach.

Principle responsibilities include utilizing and demonstrating a comprehensive theoretical knowledge base and an advanced level of clinical competence in caring for Hepatology patients. This will involve collecting and interpreting data about the health of the patient, treating and monitoring complex responses of individuals and families to actual or potential problems. The Nurse Practitioner is an integral member of the Hepatology team having specific role and responsibilities, such as performing paracentesis.

Qualifications
  • Completion of a Masters in Nursing – Nurse Practitioner (or in final semester of NP Program)
  • Current College of Nurses of Ontario Registration in the Extended Class (EC) as a NP (adult) or NP (Primary Health Care) required or pending
  • Demonstrated expertise as a Nurse Practitioner preferred
  • Up to five (5) years of relevant experience; including three (3) years experience working in the outpatient setting and Hepatology preferred
  • Commitment to collaborative practice
  • Experience in nursing research methodology an asset
  • Eligible for cross-appointment to an academic institution
  • Current certificate of registration from the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Evidence of professional malpractice insurance
  • Membership in the Canadian Association of Hepatology Nurses (CAHN) preferred
  • Knowledge of data management programs an asset
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills; including experience with documenting in electronic health records
  • Effective interpersonal and customer services skills
  • Excellent organization and time management skills
  • Excellent decision making, critical thinking, problem recognition and problem solving skills
  • Excellent negotiation and conflict resolution skills
  • Program planning and evaluation methodology skills an asset
  • Ability to work effectively independently and under stressful conditions
  • Ability to work in a self directed manner
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple demands
  • Ability to utilize information technology
  • Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support required
