Job summary

The salary range for this position is CAD $76.34/Hr. – CAD $83.98/Hr.

Bella Coola is currently seeking Nurse Practitioners to join their team of primary care and urgent care providers. The NP will collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to provide high‑quality, patient‑centered primary care to the people of Nuxalk Nation and Bella Coola. This opportunity includes housing and transportation, and the FTE is flexible. The interdisciplinary team is enthusiastic about integrating NPs into their care model. Successful candidates will receive support from the VCH NP department and the regional NP team.

About Nuxalk Nation and Bella Coola, BC

The Nuxalk Nation and the Nuxalk People have lived in and around Bella Coola for thousands of years. The community occupies a mountain valley at the head of the North Bentinck Channel, about 500 km north of Vancouver, with a population of roughly 1,800 people. Bella Coola General Hospital is a 10‑bed acute facility, 5 long‑term care beds, and a 3‑bed emergency department open 24/7, plus laboratory, diagnostic imaging, Telehealth, Mental Health, Public Health, and Home & Community Support Services. The hospital also hosts a medical clinic and a pharmacy.

As a Nurse Practitioner with VCH you will
  • Be responsible and accountable for the comprehensive assessment of patients and clients, including diagnosing diseases, disorders and conditions.
  • Initiate treatment, including health‑care management, therapeutic interventions, and prescription of medications in accordance with statutory and regulatory standards, limits and conditions, and employer policies and procedures.
  • Provide professional guidance to other health professionals and participate autonomously as a member of interdisciplinary health teams.
  • Collaborate with clients and other health professionals to identify and assess trends and patterns that have implications for clients, families and communities.
  • Develop and implement population‑based, evidence‑based strategies to improve health and participate in policy‑making and quality‑improvement activities that influence health services and practices.
  • Participate in peer, program and self‑review to evaluate the outcome of the services at the client, community and population level.
  • Be responsible for own professional development and maintain competence in the position, and maintain privileges as active medical staff as required.
  • Report to the Senior Director, Nurse Practitioners, and have accountability to the Medical Director for the service area.
Current Registration and Experience

Current registration as a Nurse Practitioner with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) and at least 4 years of recent, relevant clinical nursing experience. Successful completion of the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) is required.

Education & Experience
  • Current registration as a Nurse Practitioner with the BCCNM.
  • Prior experience as a Nurse Practitioner in the field is an asset, but the role is open to all motivated applicants.
Knowledge & Abilities
  • Ability to perform the full scope of NP duties and responsibilities.
  • Apply for and maintain core and non‑core privileges, as required by the program, and be active medical staff within the VCH Regional Department of Nurse Practitioners.
  • Apply knowledge of developmental stages, behavioral sciences, pathophysiology, psychopathology, epidemiology, and evidence‑based practice to clinical diagnosis and patient management.
  • Apply knowledge of pharmacology, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics to prescribing and evaluating treatment responses.
  • Communicate and collaborate with patients and families about health findings, diagnosis, treatment, self‑care and prognosis.
  • Collaborate, consult and formally refer clients and patients to physicians and other health professionals when appropriate.
  • Critically assess and evaluate health research literature to determine best practices and introduce education and evidence‑based research.
  • Assess and recognize population health trends; plan and implement strategies for population‑based prevention and health promotion.
  • Implement and evaluate planned change.
  • Define the specific areas of practice and client population for whom the position is competent to provide health‑care services.
  • Apply lead‑leadership skills within a program and team setting.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
