The Health and Wellness Centre located at the St George Campus, serves the health needs of a diverse population of students and is increasingly engaged in important partnerships and innovative projects to improve access and care.

This inaugural mental health nurse practitioner role will support a key priority of the University with a focus on supporting the complex needs of students with both mental health and neurodevelopmental conditions (ADHD). The Nurse Practitioner will collaborate with the Accessibility Services Office and an inter-professional clinical team inclusive of psychiatry to launch a new integrated service that will optimize the health and academic outcomes of this growing population of students. The Nurse Practitioner will practice to full scope across assessment, treatment and care co-ordination duties, and will participate in the evaluation of this new service, one of the first of its kind in Canada. The Nurse Practitioner will develop and support important linkages to establish a community of practice with CAMH, a key partner of the UofT’s mental health strategy.

Position Summary:

The Nurse Practitioner provides advanced nursing care (mental health) within the full scope of this role to optimize patient outcomes, and ensure the most accessible, effective and efficient health care for patients/students of the health centre. The Nurse Practitioner works collaboratively alongside other leaders, physicians, the interprofessional team and university and cross sectoral partners to support integrated care and student health and wellbeing. The Nurse Practitioner utilizes best practices, measurement-based care and evidenced based models of intervention to optimize the best possible outcomes for patients.

The Nurse Practitioner supports the development of innovative models of care where integration and collaboration with colleagues are critical elements of the model. The Nurse Practitioner provides assessment, counselling and treatment intervention to students who present with a continuum of need inclusive of those who require risk assessment and crisis management related to suicidal ideation, self-harm or other high-risk situations.

The Nurse Practitioner provides medication management, clinical intervention and follow-up, appropriate referrals to internal and external resources and case management for students with complex conditions, inclusive of mental health, neurodevelopmental and complex psycho-social conditions. The Nurse Practitioner performs in accordance with all regulatory and legislative requirements, ensuring the highest standards of communication, documentation and privacy and confidentiality of patient information (PHIPA). The incumbent must be proficient in the use of electronic documentation and health related applications; the Nurse Practitioner is an independent practitioner, practicing to full scope in collaboration with physicians and colleagues.

Qualifications Required:

Education:

  • Completion of a College of Nurses of Ontario Nurse Practitioner Program.
  • Current College of Nurses of Ontario registration in the Extended Class.

Experience:

  • Minimum 4 years of practical and/or related experience in mental health, primary care experience an asset.
  • Understanding of developmentally informed care with diverse transitional age youth populations in the context of a post-secondary environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with colleagues, partners within a large institution and cross sectorally.
  • Experience with the development of innovative models of care that require flexibility, adaptability and familiarity working in an accountable, high reliability environment.
  • Demonstrated understanding and experience with measurement-based care, evidence informed practice and approaches to evaluation an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience in supporting and leading change initiatives focused on improving patient care.

Skills:

  • Experience and comfort utilizing electronic health records, Microsoft Suite applications and related technology.
  • Strong assessment skills with ability to diagnosis.

Other:

  • Experience at working both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment is essential.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a wide range of stakeholders comfortably and professionally with a customer-service orientation and maintaining confidentiality, including but not limited to students, staff, faculty, and senior university officials.
  • Exceptional communication (oral and written) skills.
  • Able to adapt to shifting priorities, demands and timelines through analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities, and strong time-management abilities.
  • Demonstrated flexibility and capacity to adapt/support to clinical/operational strategies that require rapid change.
  • Persuasive, encouraging, and motivating.
  • Strong influencing and negotiating skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrable ability to make difficult decisions, particularly at critical junctures.

Note: This is a 3-year term position with a potential start date in August 2025.
