Job summary

The Kee Tas Kee Now Tribal Council invites applications for a Nurse Practitioner to deliver comprehensive, culturally safe primary care in rural and remote First Nations communities. You will work across in-person and virtual modalities, addressing newborns to palliative care, and collaborate with community health teams to improve access and outcomes.

This role requires full scope NP practice, independent clinical judgment, and commitment to Indigenous-led health approaches.

Qualifications

• Minimum of three years as a Nurse Practitioner in primary care.
• Knowledge of Cree culture; Cree language familiarity is an asset.
• Indigenous health care understanding and sensitivity.
• Completion of an accredited NP program; active or eligible for CRNA registration.
• Valid BCLS-HCP certification.
• Computer literacy required.

The Kee Tas Kee Now Tribal Council is comprised of the five member Nations and is responsible for providing guidance and support to the individual member First Nations in developing and achieving success in the management and administration of their own programs with the intent of developing self‑reliance.

The Kee Tas Kee Now Tribal Council is comprised of the member Nations of; Loon River First Nation – #476, Lubicon Lake Band – #453, Peerless Trout First Nation – #478, Whitefish Lake First Nation – #459 and Woodland Cree First Nation – #474. It was formed in 1995 to facilitate joint action by the member Nations on matters of mutual concern.

Job Description

The Nurse Practitioner will deliver comprehensive, culturally safe care to community members through both in-person and virtual modalities, ensuring accessibility and continuity of care across diverse settings. This role requires a strong commitment to providing holistic, patient-centred care to individuals across the lifespan-from newborns to those requiring palliative and end‑of‑life support-while practicing to the full scope of Nurse Practitioner competencies, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment, prescribing and health education. Working within rural and remote First Nations communities, the Nurse Practitioner will play a key role in addressing gaps in healthcare access by bringing essential services closer to home. This includes collaborating with community health teams, supporting chronic disease management, responding to primary care needs, and promoting wellness through prevention and health promotion initiatives. The position requires adaptability, cultural humility and a deep respect for indigenous knowledge and practices, with a focus on building trusting relationships and supporting community-driven approaches to health and wellbeing.

Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive primary care services including advanced health assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of acute and chronic health conditions across the lifespan.
• Independently perform and interpret diagnostic tests (e.g., laboratory investigations, point-of-care testing, imaging whereapplicable) to inform clinical decision‑making.
• Prescribe medications, including controlled substances where authorized, in accordance with provincial/territorialregulations and evidence-based clinical guidelines.
• Perform and manage routine and advanced outpatient interventions, including blood draws, initiation and management ofIV therapy, IV antibiotics, and IV infusions.
• Initiate and manage chronic disease care plans (e.g., diabetes, hypertension, COPD), including medication titration, ongoingmonitoring and patient education.
• Deliver health promotion, disease prevention, and patient education, supporting clients in self‑management and informeddecision‑making.
• Manage referrals, consultations, and follow‑up care, coordinating services across the healthcare system to ensure continuityand quality of care.
• Collaborate with physicians, nurses, allied health professionals, and community partners to support integrated, team-basedcare.
• Exercise a high level of autonomy and clinical judgment in assessing risk, making diagnoses, and determining appropriateinterventions.
• Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive documentation in accordance with professional, legal, and organizationalstandards.
• Provide culturally safe, trauma‑informed care that respects and incorporates the values, traditions, and practices of thecommunity.
• Support capacity building within the healthcare team through mentorship, education, and leadership in clinical practice.

Skills and Abilities

• Excellent and effective decision‑making skills, oral and written skills, assessment skills, interpersonal skills, organizational skills, teaching skills and supervisory skills are required.
• Ability to work independently and as a part of a team with other care providers.
• Willing, capable, and flexible in working to meet the needs of the health department.

Qualifications

• A minimum of three years of experience working as a Nurse Practitioner in a primary care setting is preferred.
• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Cree culture, organizations and communities. Familiarity with Cree language will be considered an asset.
• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of indigenous health care concerns.
• Completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program. Active or eligible for registration and practice as a NP with CRNA.
• Valid and current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
• Computer literacy – certification and/or training in entry level usage.

Conditions of Employment

Proof of Alberta NP registration without restrictions. RCMP/Police Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector and Child Welfare Intervention Record Check (formerly Child Welfare Check, CWIS) submitted prior to commencement of employment.
