A community health organization is seeking a Nurse II – RN in Family Health to work in Sioux Lookout. This role focuses on enhancing maternal, newborn, and child health services, supporting community health workers, and promoting health in First Nations communities. Applicants should have a BScN, current CPR, and relevant experience in public health. The position is full-time and ends on March 31, 2026.

Job Summary:
The Approaches to Community Wellbeing is a regional resource to 31 First Nations communities. The Approaches to Community Wellbeing provides expertise, support, services, and programming in public health to the region. The program also supports communities in the development, implementation, and monitoring of their own Approaches to Community Wellbeing. The Raising Our Children section of the model includes Family Health, Youth Development, and Building Healthy Relationships.
The Nurse II – RN, Family Health will work with the Family Health team of Raising Our Children to provide expertise around maternal, newborn, and child health. The role of the Nurse II – RN, Family Health will be to support community-based workers and to enhance community health services.
The Nurse II – RN, Family Health is directly accountable to the Manager – Raising Our Children.
This is a full-time term position ending March 31, 2026.
Qualifications:
• Persons of First Nations ancestry will be given preference (OHRC, Part II, Special Employment)
• Current Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario in good standing
• Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing BScN from an accredited University with identifiable community health nursing content
• Current CPR certification
• Three years experience in public/community health nursing, program planning, implementation, and evaluation
• Knowledge of, and/or experience with, maternal-newborn health, reproductive health, and child health programs
• Knowledge of, and/or experience in vaccine preventable diseases
• Knowledge of, and/or, experience with, infant feeding, especially breastfeeding
• International Board Certified Lactation Consultant or working towards certification would be an asset
• Knowledge of, and/or experience with, principles of adult education, health promotion, and community mobilization an asset
• Experience/interest working with at-risk families
• A strong understanding of the social determinants of health and the impact on First Nations is required
• Valid Ontario G drivers licence
• Ability to perform the requirements of the role on a regular basis
Roles and Responsibilities:
1. Identify health issues and needs relevant to First Nation communities and participate in population level health planning
2. Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing programs and community-wide based initiatives using the current knowledge of practices and trends related to the field of public health.
3. Participate in the development and evaluation of education materials and provide support to health promotion activities for Raising our Children.
4. Support and build capacity of community-based family health workers through:
5. Mentorship
6. Developing and providing resources
7. Facilitating access to professional development opportunities
8. Conducting training and workshops
9. Provide health education to prenatal and new mothers residing at the hostels.
10. Provide clinical expertise to the Raising our Children team and to community health care providers.
11. Establish and maintain close working relationships with each First Nation community’s leadership and health staff in order to build capacity and promote awareness and self-determination within family health programming and services.
12. Facilitate community development and community mobilization.
13. Provide orientation of SLFNHA’s Approaches to Community Wellbeing, and Raising our Children team to primary health care providers and facilitate continued learning opportunities regarding reproductive health, maternal-newborn health, and child health.
14. Advocate for clients and communities to enhance health determinants:
15. Liaise and work in partnership with internal and external committees, working groups, task forces, organizations, and coalitions as a representative for SLFNHA, to accomplish the roles and responsibilities noted above.
16. Conduct quality control surveillance on data management and systems operations in conjunction with the Raising our Children Manager, Data Clerks, and Epidemiologist.
17. Maintain required professional memberships and professional competence through participation in professional development programs and by self-directed study.
18. Perform other duties for SLFNHA as directed.
