Job description

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health), patient and staff safety is a priority and a shared responsibility. Continuous improvement of quality and safety is inherent in this position.

Reporting to the Program Manager or designate, the nurse participates in developing, implementing, and evaluating programs/services aligned with Island Health's Vision and Mission. Utilizing clinical expertise, the nurse functions as a resource, providing consultation and in-service education to nurses, physicians, program teams, community nurses, and other healthcare staff regarding patient care within the specialty area. Responsibilities include supervising staff, assigning work, patient assessment, and teaching both in-group and individual settings to meet diverse educational needs. Travel to various sites within Island Health and partner healthcare facilities may be required. The role involves providing direct patient care, education, and problem-solving.

Qualifications: Education, Training, and Experience
  • Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN.
  • Graduation from a recognized nursing program with CNA certification in the specialty or service area, or an equivalent combination of education and training.
  • At least three years of recent surgical experience in ostomy, fistula, and wound management, or two years of recent Enterostomal Therapy experience, or an equivalent combination of experience.
Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of current theories, technologies, and practices in the specialty area.
  • Understanding of child and adult education principles.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team.
  • Strong organizational and priority-setting skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage workload effectively.
  • Competence in planning, organizing, and evaluating patient care.
  • Assessment skills to identify learning needs across the lifespan.
  • Proficiency in teaching using adult education principles in both individual and group settings.
  • Effective interpersonal skills to interact with colleagues, physicians, community agencies, patients, and families.
  • Valid BC Driver's License.
