The Opportunity :

Bring your knowledge and clinical expertise to provide Wellness care in the role of Nurse with the Toronto Police Service.

What can I expect to do in this role?

You will provide Occupational Health & Safety services to all employees of the Service, which includes education, promotion of positive health models and prevention of illness and injury, co-ordination and implementation of pertinent and relevant Health and Safety programs, education, coaching, and medical surveillance and infection prevention and control.

Duties and Responsibilities

As a Nurse you will :

  • Provide expertise about Infection Prevention and Control to TPS members and supervisors.
  • Responsible for the review of medical files for the purposes of attendance management and return to work planning.
  • Participates and prepares for complex case management meetings related to disability management, communicable disease exposure and accommodation.
  • Develop and deliver education programs to inform staff of occupational health and safety, healthy workplace and individual well-being programs.
  • Responsible for applying thorough knowledge of appropriate legislation relevant to the workplace, for example, WSIB, Human Rights, Occupational Health & Safety Legislation, Corporate policies and Collective Agreements.
  • Co-ordinates referrals to outside agencies as required, e.g. Independent Medical Examinations, Functional Evaluation assessments. Interprets information and co-ordinates appropriate follow up as required.
  • Monitor and administer vaccination programs and communicable disease illness surveillance protocols.
  • Designated officers for communicable disease information / follow up and liaison with Public Health regarding communicable disease exposures.
  • Performs typical duties inherent to the position (i.e. maintains section related confidential files)

Education / Experience :

  • Must be a Registered Nurse (preferred) or Registered Practical Nurse and have an Occupational Health Nursing Certificate.
  • Certified Occupational Health Nurse Designation (COHN).
  • Must have a minimum of three years of experience in Occupational Health Care Nursing.
  • Must have a valid Standard First Aid & CPR-HCP.
  • Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Current OOHNA membership preferred.
  • Must possess excellent judgement and problem solving skills in order manage high risk and complex situations.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge and experience in disability case management, including WISB, LTD and STD.
  • Superb knowledge of the applicable Laws and Acts pertaining to employee health and safety (e.g. Mental Health Act, OH&S Act, Human Rights Act, the Police Services Act, Public Health Act, WSIA, etc.).
  • Ability to provide preventative intervention knowledge to eliminate or reduce industry related injury and illness.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills are required in order to effectively deal with all levels of the Service, as well as outside agencies.
  • The ability to handle sensitive issues and protect confidentiality of medical information.
  • The ability to interpret statistical data and recommend procedures to formalize a course of action.
  • Must possess a strong customer service focus
  • Strong computer skills in MS Office is required, experience working with the Parklane system is preferred
  • Must be able to champion occupational wellness and health and safety initiatives.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential.
