Your role
As a News Writer/Presenter for Radio-Canada in Toronto, you will write and present a mix of local, regional, national, and international headlines and news stories on the radio. You may also be called upon to deliver reports and news content across other platforms as needed.
You demonstrate and maintain strong organizational skills and are able to react quickly under tight deadlines and in breaking news situations. You work in accordance with Radio-Canada's journalistic and programming policies, as well as its journalistic standards and practices.
Guidance is available, but you are expected to show initiative and sound judgment. You must be capable of providing feedback and ensuring the quality of on-air news reports, including those produced by colleagues. You may also be required to coordinate the activities of others, and close collaboration with program teams is essential.
Key responsibilities:
- Draw from various sources to compile reports prepared by Radio-Canada journalists on local, regional, national, and international issues.
- Prepare the news bulletin, structure the rundown, and read the bulletin on air every hour or half-hour.
- Facilitate the flow and sharing of information between local and regional newsrooms and the national newsroom.
- Rewrite scripts as needed to tailor them for the local and regional audience.
When required, you may also:
- Perform technical tasks required to air hourly news bulletins and, if needed, half-hour headlines.
- Prepare and read half-hour headlines.
- Deliver a brief on-air weather update for the relevant region.
- Promote upcoming programs on Radio-Canada networks.
- Conduct live interviews with reporters in the field or present breaking news.
- Complete logs for each news bulletin.
- Edit reports sent in by journalists.
- Upload audio clips into the digital system for use in newscasts.
- Prepare the news bulletin for publication on one of the Corporation’s websites.
Profile sought:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent and at least two (2) years of journalism experience, along with strong on-air presentation skills
- Knowledge of Radio-Canada’s journalistic and programming policies
- Comfort with live on-air delivery
- Ability to write clearly, concisely, and compellingly for strong presentations
- Excellent oral communication skills
- Familiarity with issues affecting Ontario’s Francophone community in general
- Ability to work with various teams
- Demonstrated critical thinking skills
- Proven ability to perform under high stress in a tight-deadline environment
- Understanding of the role and responsibilities of a public broadcaster
- Excellent command of French and the ability to work in English
