Job summary

CBC Edmonton is seeking an experienced News Editor/Presenter to lead weekday afternoon newscasts for both radio and digital platforms. The role requires strong editorial leadership, the ability to gather, prepare and present daily news, and coordination with noon and afternoon programming.

Your Role

CBC Edmonton is looking for an experienced news editor/presenter to lead our weekday afternoon newscasts to for audiences listening live on the radio and on digital platforms. If you’re an exceptional daily journalist who thrives in the fast-paced, high pressure world of live, breaking news, read on . As the afternoon newsreader, you will play an integral editorial and leadership role in gathering, preparing and presenting the daily news, keeping our audiences informed about what’s happening now in Edmonton and northern Alberta. In this role, you collaborate closely with the teams working on our noon and afternoon current affairs radio programming, coordinating coverage off-air and bringing a high-energy, team-first presence on-air. You effortlessly balance core news delivery with warmth, humour and lively studio interactions. You’re the kind of journalist who loves the adrenaline rush of chasing breaking news and you’re not intimidated by the prospect of changing lineups and rewriting newscasts under very tight deadlines You embrace the challenge of keeping your newscasts as up-to-date as possible, chasing stories yourself and adding essential context to build trust, show care for your audience and ensure listeners get the full story. You understand the diverse and changing population in Edmonton and northern Alberta, and the importance of broadening the range of perspectives, experiences and points of view reflected on our programming, especially those from people who have been traditionally underrepresented in the media. In your work, you will ensure CBC journalistic standards are met and that our stories are fair, balanced, accurate, thoughtful and immediate.

This role requires a full-time, on-site presence. The successful candidate will generally be assigned to work weekdays, 11 a.m. to 7:15 p.m., though flexibility to work other days and shift times will be required.This is a temporary position, from October 2026 to September 2027.We also are hiring for a morning news presenter, along with several jobs in our Edmonton station and northern Alberta bureaus. Your Responsibilities

• Plan, organize, line up and deliver newscasts and news breaks.
• Respond quickly to breaking news, collaborating with journalists across platforms to chase, gather, write and package stories to ensure our coverage is as up-to-date as possible.
• Write and edit scripts; cut audio clips and package stories.
• Conduct interviews on and off air.
• Self-operate the studio audio board during live newscasts.
• Vet scripts written by other journalists, providing feedback to help them develop their skills and produce content of the highest quality.
• Report live and breaking news on-air, interacting with hosts and program participants to provide news updates, analysis and context to enhance the audience’s understanding of issues.
• Present newscasts on other platforms (streaming, podcasts, digital, video) as required.

Your Profile

• Demonstrated experience working in live and breaking news in a fast-paced, multiplatform news environment.
• Ability to generate, pitch and pursue strong, original story ideas.
• Strong news judgment and a demonstrated ability to react quickly to breaking news and changing priorities, and chase multiple stories at once.
• Excellent critical thinking skills, including knowledge of the legal and ethical issues related to journalism.
• Engaging on-air presence, a strong presentation style and an ease with live, on-air work.
• Ability to present material with credibility and authority in a range of situations including live events and breaking news.
• Ability to quickly cut audio clips from a variety of audio and video sources.
• Superior script writing and script editing skills.
• An understanding of Alberta’s political landscape, economic drivers and demographics, and a strong proven connection to the communities we serve in and around Edmonton and northern Alberta.
• A proven work ethic, strong communication skills and a positive, team-first attitude.
• A strong desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.
• Possession of a valid driver’s licence as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance company.
• University degree in journalism or equivalent with a minimum of four years of recent, related experience.
• Ability and willingness to work flexible hours as required.
