Job summary

CBC Edmonton is looking for an experienced News Editor/Presenter to lead our weekday morning newscasts for audiences listening live on the radio, and on digital platforms. In this on-site role, you will set the news agenda and coordinate with the AM current affairs team, delivering timely, engaging stories with editorial leadership.

You will gather, prepare and present daily news across CBC’s platforms, handling tight deadlines with a team-first approach while maintaining CBC journalistic

Qualifications

• University degree in journalism or equivalent.

Your Role

CBC Edmonton is looking for an experienced news editor/presenter to lead our weekday morning newscasts for audiences listening live on the radio , and on digital platforms. As a key member of CBC Edmonton’s morning on‑air team, you thrive on setting the news agenda for listeners starting their day. You are passionate about providing breaking news to audiences, and injecting their mornings with some joy. You believe in collaborating with colleagues to make material resonate across CBC’s platforms. As the morning newsreader, you will play an integral editorial and leadership role in gathering, preparing and presenting the daily news, keeping our audiences informed about what’s happening now in Edmonton and northern Alberta. In this role, you will work closely with the Edmonton AM current affairs radio programming team coordinating coverage off‑air and bringing a high‑energy, team‑first presence on‑air. You effortlessly balance core news delivery with the show’s lively pace and agenda‑setting interviews. You’re the kind of journalist who loves the adrenaline rush of chasing breaking news and you’re not intimidated by the prospect of changing lineups and rewriting newscasts under very tight deadlines. You embrace the challenge of keeping your newscasts as up‑to‑date as possible, chasing stories yourself and adding essential context to build trust, show care for your audience and ensure listeners get the full story. You understand the diverse and changing population in Edmonton and northern Alberta, and the importance of broadening the range of perspectives, experiences and points of view reflected on our programming, especially from people who have been traditionally underrepresented in the media. In your work, you will ensure CBC journalistic standards are met and that our stories are fair, balanced, accurate, thoughtful and immediate. This role requires a full‑time, on‑site presence. The successful candidate will generally be assigned to work weekdays, 4:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., though flexibility to work other days and shift times will be required.

Your Responsibilities

Your Profile

• Demonstrated experience working in live and breaking news in a fast‑paced, multiplatform news environment.
• Ability to generate, pitch and pursue strong, original story ideas.
• Strong news judgment and a demonstrated ability to react quickly to breaking news and changing priorities, and chase multiple stories at once.
• Excellent critical thinking skills, including knowledge of the legal and ethical issues related to journalism.
• Engaging on‑air presence, a strong presentation style and an ease with live, on‑air work.
• Ability to present material with credibility and authority in a range of situations including live events and breaking news.
• Ability to quickly cut audio clips from a variety of audio and video sources.
• Superior script writing and script editing skills.
• An understanding of Alberta’s political landscape, economic drivers and demographics, and a strong proven connection to the communities we serve in and around Edmonton and northern Alberta.
• A proven work ethic, strong communication skills and a positive, team‑first attitude.
• A strong desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.
• Possession of a valid driver’s licence as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio‑Canada's insurance company.
• University degree in journalism or equivalent with a minimum of four years of recent, related experience.
• Ability and willingness to work flexible hours as required.
