Job description

The Nephrology Technologist maintains and services dialysis equipment, provides technical support to patients, nursing, and medical staff, and initiates, monitors, and terminates dialysis treatments according to unit protocols. May be required to work at various campuses and hospital sites as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS :

  • 3-year college diploma in Electrical / Electronic Technical diploma and/or Health Sciences
  • Technologist certification through the hospital
  • Successful completion of an internal training program with a minimum passing grade of 80%
  • 1 to 3 years of practical and related experience
  • Advanced computer skills and technical aptitude
  • Knowledge of Nephrology Technical Practice standards, departmental policies, and procedures; dialysis-specific training, vascular access cannulation, and OR environmental training
  • Effective communication skills to work with patients and staff in a courteous manner
  • Willingness to work in a chronic care, patient-oriented environment
  • Knowledge and sensitivity in caring for seniors and their families

RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Operate, maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot dialysis and water treatment equipment; monitor and control devices during treatments
  • Perform clinical procedures under medical delegation, including initiation and discontinuation of hemodialysis, creating access, monitoring blood pressure, administering heparin, and collecting blood specimens
  • Assess fistula/graft using ultrasound and blood flow with transonic
  • Document all patient care activities according to hospital standards
  • Adhere to hospital policies and maintain confidentiality
  • Collect statistics, prepare reports on products, technological advances, and quality initiatives
  • Set up dialysis equipment in various locations, including patients’ homes, ensuring compliance with CSA standards and codes
  • Prepare machines and disposables as per physician’s orders
  • Monitor equipment during dialysis and troubleshoot issues
  • Test dialysis and water treatment equipment for contamination and electrolyte levels, adding chemicals as needed
  • Follow infection control protocols, including equipment disinfection and isolation procedures
  • Assist in training new staff and patients for home and self-care dialysis
  • Participate in on-call schedule as required
  • Act as renal perfusionist following extensive training and delegation of medical acts
  • Provide support to other hospitals and participate in research studies
