The Natural History Collection Management Assistant will take part in the review, planning and implementation of recovery efforts following a mould outbreak at The Rooms Natural History Collections Facility. The work will consist in the re-organisation of supplies and equipment in collection storage, laboratories and workspaces, as well as the inventory, documentation, condition reporting, re-housing and preventative treatment of natural history specimens from zoology, botany, geology and paleontology collections. It will include record creation and enhancement in the institutional collection management system (Axiell EMu).
Professional museum staff will provide specialized training and supervision for the candidate in the tasks outlined above and provide them with an array of collection management and conservation skills and knowledge, in a multidisciplinary setting.
The ideal candidate will be either a recent graduate of a recognized university or college program in heritage conservation and management with practical experience in organismal biology, and the management of scientific collections and data, OR a recent graduate of a recognized university or college program in biology or environmental resource management with practical experience in information and records management, and/or heritage conservation and management.
Candidates will have strong attention to detail, good research and communication skills, well developed manual dexterity, and be proficient with computers, preferably with experience in working with database systems. They will also have the ability to think critically and creatively, manage their time well, work independently, and establish and maintain effective working relationships in a team environment. They will possess an enthusiasm for natural history, and an interest in learning new skills and working with natural history specimens, records and databases. Knowledge of taxonomy, and experience working with natural history collections and data would be assets.
Length of assignment: 2025-06-04 – 2025-12-16
The successful candidate will regularly work 7 hours a day, Monday to Friday.
This position is funded in part through the Young Canada Works at Building Careers in Heritage program, and all applicants must be registered in the YCW candidate pool and meet the current YCW-BCH eligibility criteria. Candidates may be eligible for a YCW-BCH position if they:
- are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent resident status are not eligible);
- are legally entitled to work in Canada (have a valid social insurance number);
- are between 16 and 30 years of age inclusively at the start of employment; and
- are a college or university graduate (certificate, bachelor's, master's or doctorate).
