CANADIAN BAND ASSOCIATION ONTARIO CHAPTER is seeking a Musical Director for the Brampton Concert Band. The role provides artistic leadership, conducts rehearsals and performances, and shapes repertoire to inspire a dedicated group of volunteer musicians.

The successful candidate will lead rehearsals, collaborate with the Band Executive on concert planning, and foster growth and community engagement through music. Equity and inclusion are encouraged.

Qualifications

  • Experience conducting concert bands or wind ensembles.
  • Strong knowledge of repertoire and ensemble techniques.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience working with volunteer musicians of varying ages and abilities.
  • A music degree or equivalent experience is an asset.

Musical Director Position - Brampton Concert Band

The Brampton Concert Band is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Musical Director to provide artistic leadership and inspire a dedicated group of volunteer musicians. This is an exciting opportunity to lead a longstanding community ensemble committed to musical excellence, lifelong learning, and community engagement.

About the Brampton Concert Band

The Brampton Concert Band is a volunteer community ensemble comprised of musicians from diverse backgrounds and experience levels who share a passion for concert band music. The band presents regular concerts throughout the year and contributes to the cultural life of the Brampton community through engaging performances and outreach. Founded in 1884 by volunteer workers from the local Haggert Foundry as the Brampton Mechanics Band, the Brampton Concert band is one of the oldest community concert bands in Canada.

Position Summary

The Musical Director serves as the artistic leader of the band and is responsible for conducting rehearsals and performances, selecting repertoire, fostering musical growth, and collaborating with the Band Executive to support the organisation's goals.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct weekly rehearsals and all scheduled performances.
  • Develop and implement the band's artistic vision.
  • Select repertoire that challenges and engages musicians while appealing to audiences.
  • Foster a welcoming, inclusive, and positive rehearsal environment.
  • Encourage musical growth and participation amongst members.
  • Work collaboratively with the Band Executive on concert planning, recruitment initiatives, and special projects.
  • Support efforts to attract and retain musicians.
  • Recommend guest artists, clinicians, and educational opportunities where appropriate.
Qualifications

The successful candidate will possess:

  • Experience conducting concert bands, wind ensembles, or similar groups.
  • Strong knowledge of concert band repertoire and ensemble techniques.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience working with volunteer musicians of varying ages and abilities.
  • A degree in music, conducting, music education, or equivalent experience is considered an asset.
Time Commitment
  • Weekly rehearsals on Thursday evenings from 7:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
  • Rehearsals are held at 55A Queen Street East, Brampton, Ontario.
  • Attendance at scheduled concerts, performances, events, and executive meetings.
  • Preparation time for rehearsals and performances.
Compensation
  • An honorarium will be provided, commensurate with experience and subject to the band's budget.
Audition and Interview Process

Candidates selected for further consideration will be invited to participate in an audition consisting of:

1. Rehearsal Conducting
  • Candidates will conduct the Brampton Concert Band during a scheduled rehearsal. This will provide an opportunity to demonstrate:
  • Conducting technique and rehearsal effectiveness.
  • Musical interpretation.
  • Communication and teaching skills.
  • Ability to engage and motivate musicians.
  • Leadership style and rehearsal management.
  • Music selections and rehearsal details will be provided in advance.
2. Interview

Candidates will participate in an in-person interview with members of the Band Executive to discuss:

  • Conducting and leadership experience.
  • Artistic vision for a community concert band.
  • Experience working with volunteer ensembles.
  • Approaches to member recruitment, retention, and community engagement.
