Job Summary:
The Hamlet Operator is accountable to the Projects & Infrastructure Supervisor for efficient and effective operations of Water and Wastewater infrastructure in the Municipal District of Taber (MDT), as well as year-round maintenance of parks, public spaces, and other municipal property within the hamlets. There are two positions available — one based in Enchant and one based in Hays.
Daily Work Activities Include:
Water and Wastewater Infrastructure:
- Conduct routine testing to ensure quality of water, wastewater, and associated hamlet infrastructure.
- Conduct routine visual inspections of water and wastewater facilities and infrastructure to identify potential issues and ensure safe and efficient operation of the MDT hamlet and infrastructure facilities.
- Ensure that critical deadlines are met on a consistent basis including reporting requirements outlined within municipal, provincial, federal acts, statutes, regulations, bylaws, and policies.
- Assist and coordinate with qualified professionals for repair and maintenance programs and requirements.
- Report any operational concerns or potential problems promptly.
- Ensure the security of infrastructure sites.
- Ensure compliance with all Federal, Provincial, and Municipal policies applicable to the function of managing and operating Hamlet Infrastructure (Water, Waste Water, Storm Drainage).
Winter Maintenance:
- Operate snowplows, snow blowers, and other equipment to clear snow from sidewalks, pathways, and parking areas.
- Apply salt, sand, or other approved materials for ice control to ensure public safety.
- Conduct basic maintenance and report any issues with snow removal equipment.
Parks and Grounds Maintenance:
- Perform regular mowing, trimming, and general upkeep of grassed areas in parks and along public roadways.
- Maintain the health and appearance of shrubs and trees in public spaces, including planting, watering, and basic pruning.
- Ensure the upkeep of sports fields and park amenities like playground equipment, fences and benches.
- Manage waste disposal in parks and public areas, ensuring cleanliness.
- Assist with the setup and takedown for community events held in public spaces.
Other:
- Act as a resource person to MDT administrative staff and perform duties as delegated in order to ensure the efficient operation of the organization.
- Lead and mentor assistant hamlet operators in all aspects of the role including that of resolving conflict, maintaining harmonious working relationships throughout the organization, with various stakeholders, contractors, and the general public.
- Be willing and able to respond to emergencies within the municipality and further within the hamlets infrastructure systems.
- Perform other municipal duties as may be assigned from time to time by the Projects & Infrastructure Supervisor and Manager of Public Works & Infrastructure.
Requirements
Education and Knowledge Required:
- Post-secondary degree, diploma, or a certificate in Water and Wastewater systems, equivalent experience, or a combination of education and experience.
- Certified in the following Water treatment, water distribution, wastewater treatment, wastewater collection operator’s certification as issued by Alberta Environment sufficient to operate all municipal and regional water and wastewater systems.
- Comprehensive knowledge of regulations and compliance.
Experience and Technical Skills Required:
- Minimum Level 1 Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection Certification.
- Valid Class 5 Operator's License or willingness to upgrade.
- Ability to be On-Call and have strong problem-solving skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Strong organization and leadership skills.
