ABOUT ISLAND HEALTH

Victoria General Hospital [VGH]

The VGH ICU is a 16 bed critical care unit and designated Trauma Centre for Island Health, operating under a no-refusal policy. As the tertiary referral center for Neurosurgery and Trauma on Vancouver Island, VGH plays a critical role in managing complex and emergent cases.

The VGH ICU provides the full spectrum of intensive care services, including Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT). Patients receive care for injuries and illnesses such as multiple traumas, craniectomies, external ventricular drains, cerebrovascular accidents, and complex medical and post-operative surgical conditions.

The ICU collaborates closely with the tertiary pediatric critical care team within the building and supports maternal health patients requiring critical care. ICU staff lead the hospital’s Code Blue Team, responding to both adult and pediatric emergencies across the facility, and support a Critical Care Outreach Team.

The VGH ICU is an open layout unit where accessing help from colleagues is easy and encouraged. The interdisciplinary team includes Critical Care RNs, nursing unit assistants, health care aides, respiratory therapists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech language pathologists, rehabilitation assistants, dieticians, pharmacists, and physicians. Dedicated intensivists manage admissions and provide 24/7 in-house support.

VGH ICU is well located near the growing Westshore communities. Accessing other areas of town is convenient from its location next to the highway and the regional multiuse trail for pedestrians and cyclists. Outdoor spaces around the building allow staff to enjoy a fresh air break.

Royal Jubilee Hospital [RJH]

Royal Jubilee Hospital Intensive Care Unit (RJH ICU) is a 13 bed tertiary critical care unit with active plans for future expansion. The ICU operates as a closed unit under a no-refusal policy and provides comprehensive critical care services.

Advanced therapies include Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) and veno-venous Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (VV-ECMO). The ICU team works closely with the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) to provide Code Blue emergency response throughout the hospital.

RJH ICU is a mixed medical-surgical unit that admits critically ill patients from Royal Jubilee Hospital and referral sites across Vancouver Island. The unit cares for a diverse medical population including patients with sepsis, respiratory failure, complex metabolic derangements, renal failure, and multi-organ dysfunction.

The ICU also provides care for complex surgical patients from specialties including vascular surgery, thoracic surgery, orthopedics, burns, and plastics. Critically ill post-operative patients following procedures such as abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, esophagectomy, pneumonectomy, and complex vascular interventions are also cared for within the unit.

RJH ICU also functions as a Higher Level of Care (HLOC) referral centre for hospitals across Vancouver Island. Patients are transferred for services not available in community or rural ICUs and for access to specialty programs located at Royal Jubilee Hospital. The unit is part of the Provincial Burn Program and receives patients with major burns from across British Columbia.

Care is delivered by a highly collaborative interdisciplinary team including 24/7 in-house intensivist coverage, medical students and residents, critical care nurses, respiratory therapists, care aides, unit clerks, clinical pharmacists, social workers, and allied health professionals.

Royal Jubilee Hospital is located in the urban heart of Victoria, just minutes from the downtown core. Many staff take advantage of the hospital\'s central location by commuting via walking, cycling, or public transit. The site is valued for both its accessibility and its broad range of specialty services.

At Island Health, our values shape our actions and guide our decision-making as we plan for the future. Our vision is "Excellent health and care for everyone, everywhere, every time".
