A leading company in Ontario is seeking a Millwright responsible for installing and repairing machinery and ensuring efficient operation. The role involves troubleshooting, conducting preventative maintenance, and supervising apprentices while adhering to safety standards. Candidates should have a high school education, completed an apprenticeship, and possess at least five years of experience in the field.
Purpose of Position : The Millwright is responsible for installing or dismantling machinery and equipment according to company plans, blueprints, and other diagrams. This will be accomplished through the safe and effective use of hoists, lift trucks, hand tools, and power tools. This position also requires that the Millwright troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, or pneumatic problems with associated equipment. The Millwright is also responsible for repairing malfunctioning equipment, such as motors, pumps, valves, controls, and other machines.
Qualifications
Formal Education : High School Education. Graduate from a recognized Mechanical Millwright Apprenticeship Program. Pass Qualification Exam.
Knowledge and Skills : The incumbent must have good computer knowledge including Word, Lotus Notes, Excel. Ability to draw, read, interpret schematics. Basic knowledge of materials, design, calculations as acquired through the Millwright program. Knowledge of proper use of toolroom / machine shop equipment. Knowledge of electric, pneumatics, hydraulics, mechanics as acquired through Millwright program. Ongoing training includes Lockout, Fall Arrest, First Aid, Confined Space, etc.
Experience : At least 5 years of experience as a qualified Millwright.
Communication Skills : Good verbal and written communication skills are required for normal business interactions. Because of the nature of the position, communication between shifts is critical. All maintenance staff are required to come to work 5 to 10 minutes early to discuss problems, work assignments with the exiting shift, and staff are expected to stay 5 – 10 minutes as needed to ensure the incoming shift has all necessary information.

Scope and Nature of the Position
The position of Millwright is responsible for ensuring all production equipment continues to run smoothly with minimal downtime. He / she is responsible for implementing the preventative maintenance program and responding to calls for maintenance when machine problems or breakdowns occur. The position is required to be good at problem-solving and to complete tasks with urgency, as any downtime for production is critical. The position operates independently with very little supervision.
It is important that the incumbents are accurate and highly analytical. They require a strong work ethic and positive team attitude. Journeyperson Millwrights have specific responsibilities for the training and overseeing of apprentices from time to time. Especially on the off-shift times, millwrights are expected to be responsible for all aspects of the apprentices’ work, and the apprentice is expected to follow instruction of the qualified millwright without question. Also during weekend shifts, the millwright working is responsible for ensuring contractors complete all their tasks competently and safely. The millwright is considered to be a ‘supervisor’ within the definition of the Occupational Health and Safety Act. The position will be trained in all responsibilities of a supervisor under this definition and is expected to comply with all legal obligations.
The position interacts internally with production staff, purchasing and management.
