The middle school mathematics curriculum at University School of Nashville is about more than just numbers and formulas. It's a journey that helps students extend their ability to think and communicate mathematically. Our curriculum, grounded in the standards of the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and Common Core State Standards (CCSS), is accelerated, allowing students to take Algebra 1 in their 8th-grade year. This unique approach encourages students to apply mathematical reasoning to increasingly complex problems and situations. If you're familiar with the Desmos Graphing Calculator, Desmos Classroom Activities, the Amplify/Desmos curriculum, Illustrative Math curriculum, or Open Up Resources curriculum, that's a plus. Experience in differentiating instruction in the classroom to support all learners, including those who need more support and enrichment, is required for this role.
Education
The successful candidate will have at least a bachelor’s degree in math or a related field, a demonstrated ability to work effectively with students of varying learning styles and abilities, a strong commitment to interdisciplinary learning in a team approach, and an interest in and skill at collaborating with other adults in an educational setting. Candidates should find themselves in strong alignment with our mathematics department’s mission statement:
“If you walk into our math classrooms, you will see students exploring math through discovery and conjecture. Our students create their own understanding through interactive class discussions and small group collaboration. Our department values a student-centered learning environment where students engage with a variety of approaches to problem solving. We feel students learn best by taking intellectual risks and incorporating constructive feedback within a curious and safe classroom community. We believe every student has the ability to create and understand powerful mathematical arguments. We purposefully design classrooms that encourage learners to persevere and think flexibly through challenging problems. The department maintains that mathematics education develops problem-solving skills, fosters an appreciation for the beauty of mathematics, encourages intelligent civic engagement and offers paths towards future success.”
At University School of Nashville, we are deeply committed to creating equitable and just community spaces. We believe that understanding and addressing implicit biases in race, ethnicity, gender identity, and socioeconomic class is crucial to shaping curricula and pedagogy, classroom culture, and student outcomes. We're looking for candidates who understand this and can translate that knowledge into demonstrable actions that promote equitable and just teaching and learning.
The School
University School of Nashville has a rich history that dates back to 1915 when George Peabody College for Teachers opened Peabody Demonstration School, our predecessor. The school earned acclaim for its curriculum and faculty. In 1974, Peabody College announced plans to close PDS, but a group of parents, alumni, students, and teachers reconstituted and re-chartered the school as University School of Nashville. Today, we're an independent, nonsectarian, coeducational day school with nearly 1,100 kindergarten through twelfth-grade students. We're committed to creating an institutional environment that mirrors the cultural and ethnic composition of greater Nashville, and we encourage a diverse applicant pool.
USN’s midtown location adjacent to Vanderbilt University and its Peabody College for Teachers reminds us each day of our beginnings 110 years ago in the demonstration school culture of innovation and educational best practices. It’s a vibrant educational community for both students and teachers in the midst of a dynamic city.
In the USN community, students expect much of each other, and faculty benefit from that high standard. We seek educators who are enthusiastic about their own learning to complement their teaching, and we offer many opportunities for professional development. USN is committed to creating an institutional environment that mirrors the cultural and ethnic composition of greater Nashville. USN encourages a diverse applicant pool and provides equal employment opportunities for employees and job applicants. We believe in investing in our educators' growth and development, recognizing their potential to shape the future of our students.
