The Academic Math/Physical Education/Science Teacher plans and delivers instruction for YMCA Academy Middle School (grades 6, 7 & 8), aligned with Ontario Ministry of Education standards. This role fosters an engaging and inclusive learning environment, promotes student growth through innovative teaching, and adapts to diverse learning needs. Collaboration with colleagues, families, and the school community, along with active participation in professional development and school initiatives, is essential. This position offers the opportunity to inspire middle school students and contribute meaningfully to their academic and personal development.

In this role, you will:
  1. Develop and deliver a comprehensive curriculum in alignment with the Ontario Ministry of Education guidelines and standards for Math/Physical Education/Science.
  2. Provide individualized feedback and support to students to help them achieve their full potential in art, addressing different learning needs and styles.
  3. Manage classroom materials and resources, ensuring a safe, clean, and organized workspace for all students.
  4. Develop and administer formative and summative assessments to evaluate student learning.
  5. Maintain accurate records of student progress and achievements.
  6. Create a positive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages respect and collaboration.
  7. Implement classroom management strategies to ensure a safe and productive learning atmosphere; address and resolve conflicts or behavioral issues in a fair and consistent manner.
  8. Differentiate instruction to meet the varied learning needs and abilities of students.
  9. Provide additional support and resources for students with learning difficulties or exceptionalities.
  10. Serve as a mentor and role model, guiding students in their academic and personal development.
  11. Work collaboratively with colleagues, administrators, and support staff to enhance the educational experience.
  12. Participate in departmental staff meetings, school committees, and professional learning communities.
  13. Attend Parent/Teacher interviews, Open Houses, Parent Socials, and Curriculum Information Sessions for Parents; discuss student performance and strategies for improvement in parent-teacher conferences.
  14. Maintain open and regular communication with parents/guardians regarding student progress and school events.
  15. Engage in ongoing professional development to stay current with educational best practices and curriculum changes.
  16. Attend workshops, conferences, and training sessions as required by the school.
  17. Maintain accurate records of student attendance, grades, and other required documentation.
  18. Prepare and submit reports as needed for school administration and the Ontario Ministry of Education.
  19. Participate in extracurricular activities, such as clubs, sports, or student organizations, to support the overall school community.
  20. Assist in organizing and supervising school events, field trips, and other activities.
  21. Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions with students, parents, and colleagues.
  22. Perform other duties as assigned.
You bring:
  1. Completion of a recognized teacher education program, such as a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.), with specialization or major in Math, Physical Education, Science, or equivalent, with a focus on middle or secondary school education.
  2. Membership in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) and a valid teaching certificate.
  3. Minimum of Special Education Part 1.
  4. Qualifications to teach in the Junior (Grade 6) and Intermediate (Grades 7-8) divisions, with specific qualifications.
  5. Previous teaching experience at the secondary school level is highly desirable.
  6. Demonstrated experience in and enthusiasm for working with youth with learning disabilities, social/emotional needs, and/or language processing challenges who are underperforming or disengaged from their learning process.
  7. In-depth knowledge and understanding of the Ontario Secondary School Curriculum and Ministry of Education guidelines.
  8. Knowledge of current curricular trends, including the use of manipulatives and assistive technologies.
  9. Ability to integrate technology into the classroom.
  10. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to effectively interact with students, parents, and colleagues.
  11. Strong classroom management skills and the ability to create a positive and inclusive learning environment.
  12. Dedication to continuous learning and professional growth through attending workshops, conferences, and pursuing further education.
  13. Ability to work effectively in a diverse school community and incorporate inclusive practices that respect and reflect the diversity of the student population.
  14. Well-developed interpersonal and relationship-building skills; ability to establish rapport and communicate effectively with students, parents/guardians, staff, and volunteers.
  15. Ability to work within the complexities of a large, not-for-profit charitable organization.
