Job Description

Position Purpose summary:

Under the direction of the Program Manager, the Mental Health Support Services Supervisor will provide guidance, support and supervision for The Salvation Army’s Mental Health Support Services staff and will be responsible for program development and delivery. The three areas of responsibility include supervision of frontline staff, staff training, and administration.

Accountabilities

Staff Supervision

  • Prepares and maintains shift schedules
  • Coordinates and fills work schedules to cover Mental Health Support Services shifts
  • Recruits, interviews, and hires staff in conjunction with the Program Manager and HR
  • Delegates and follows up on work of support staff
  • Provides day-to-day problem solving and support to staff
  • Provides support, guidance, and direction to train staff in all aspects of program participant service
  • Coordinates, prepares, attends, and facilitates staff meetings
  • Ensures staff compliance with policy and procedures
  • Provides clinical supervision to staff

Human Relations

  • Directly supervises and supports the staff
  • Complete Performance Excellence and Coaching (PEAC) for direct reports
  • Participate in corrective action within the guidelines of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (i.e., coaching, progressive discipline as required)
  • Monitors staff attendance in accordance with the Absence Management System
  • Trains and develops direct reports for self-improvement
  • Provides formal staff training and assesses staff training needs

Program Management

  • Provides direction for Mental Health Support Services program development
  • Oversees and provides guidance for the development of appropriate case management plans, monitors and evaluates case plans
  • Oversees and monitors the provision of daily life skills education provided by staff to program participants
  • Supervising case management by leading pre and post group de-briefing sessions with respect to client care and program delivery
  • Develops and monitors behavioural modification strategies.
  • Provides incidental problem solving and emotional support to clients.
  • Reviews safety plans for individual clients to ensure they are not put at unreasonable levels of risk.
  • Directs staff to information regarding medications and medical conditions.
  • Ensures client’s medical needs are met.
  • Working with the team to research and develop the various Mental Health and Addictions related support programs
  • Trains, orients, and reviews implementation of emergency procedures related to the facility and or the program participants i.e., CPR, fire evacuations, etc. with staff
  • Oversees the safe operation of the Mental Health Support Services site & reports any deficiencies to the Operations Manager
  • Provides immediate stabilization crisis management support and provides emergency incidental behaviour management
  • Oversees staff in recording up to date program participant data
  • Participation and leadership of committees related to MHSS, ensures minutes are taken and circulated to committee members, and that decisions of committees are followed up

Administration

  • Monitors program participant budgets
  • Monitors records such as medical files, incident reports, accounting sheets, client finances, observation notebooks on clients, logbooks and communication books
  • Monitors for accurate, up-to-date case notes, treatment plans, progress reports and discharge summaries
  • Maintains and controls all old program participant records up to previous fiscal year
  • Prepares a variety of correspondence, reports, statistical reports, reports for funders, etc.
  • Collects, approves, and processes departmental staff time sheets
  • Assists with the development, updating and evaluation of agency policy and procedures and ensures staff compliance with policy and procedures
  • Assuming on call duties as required – assists staff as needed, responds to emergency situations and shift cancellations
  • Complies with The Salvation Army policy and procedures
  • Performs other tasks as assigned by the Program Manager

Community Involvement

  • Meeting or communicating regularly with relevant agencies for case conferences and solving problems relating to specific program participants
  • Interacting with others involved with the program participants to support their family and community relationships
  • Using communication skills to ensure positive inter-agency relationships
  • Acting as the primary contact for contracting agencies regarding program participant issues and referrals

Written and Verbal Communication

  • Develop and document business requirements, process and reports as needed
  • Develop and document options and recommendations to issues and problems
  • Support key stakeholders in understanding the implications of options and decisions

Working Conditions

  • This is a full-time, fixed term position at 40 hours per week until March 31, 2026.
  • Salary Range is $71,000 to $75,000 per year
  • Combination of office and front-line working environment based on the needs of the department
  • Often working with high-risk and high-needs population
  • Meetings with outside agencies and other community resources – at times accompanying/attending on behalf of the Program Manager
  • Can be a fast paced, sometimes stressful environment
  • Typical travel requirements for this position are (5% travel within the community)
  • As necessary lifting/moving of totes (up to 20 lbs) of clients' belongings

Education And Experience Qualifications

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

  • A Degree in Social Sciences, Social Work, or Nursing required
  • Addictions Certification (diploma or certificate) or related experience or I.C.A.D.C. is an asset
  • Valid Suicide Intervention Certification
  • Valid First Aid Certificate
  • Valid Non-violent Crisis Intervention Certificate
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license
  • Computer Literacy

Experience And Skilled Knowledge Requirements

  • A minimum five (5) years of related experience with a minimum three (3) years in supervisory role in a similar setting
  • Experience working with a diverse population, with sensitivity to differences in culture, religion, sexual orientation, race, age, and physical and mental illness
  • Experience interviewing, and effectively communicating and interacting with individuals experiencing effects of substance use
  • Respect and understanding of The Salvation Army – its mission, culture, and values

Skills And Capabilities

  • Demonstrated experience in supervising and coaching staff and working in a team setting
  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication
  • Strong attention to detail, problem solving, and analytical skills
  • Ability to maintain clear personal and professional boundaries
  • Ability to work effectively in constantly changing and sometimes demanding or chaotic environment.
  • Proven ability to respond calmly & responsibly in emergency and crisis situations
  • Ability to recommend solutions for complex behaviour issues and to review and monitor program participants Personal Development Plans
  • Proven relationship building with contracting agencies and community resources
  • Solid understanding of basic budgetary statements
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office 365 and ability to learn Salvation Army reporting programs

Compensation

The target hiring range for this position is $55,331.51 to $69,164.38 with a maximum of $82,997.26.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
