Qualifications

A Day in the Life:

The Merchandiser is responsible for managing all aspects of an assigned commodity, maximizing profitability through trading strategies, procurement, and arbitrage opportunities. They will develop business plans for the commodity which include creating sales and procurement strategies, establishing prices, and managing associated risks.

What You'll Be Doing:
  • Develops the strategy for a single commodity.
  • Develops and manages the commodity's business plan including volume handled, sales strategy, volume to market and transportation position management objectives.
  • Develops and implements procurement strategies including establishing street and deferred delivery contract prices.
  • Responsible for daily decisions about the commodity. Seeks assistance on key decision‑making situations.
  • Builds and maintains strong relationships with customers.
  • Liaises with global marketing office on commodities.
  • Approves pricing premiums and discounts within provided guidelines.
  • Analyzes and manages moderate risks within approved limits.
  • Identifies, analyzes, and trades into domestic markets, initiating market development activities where required.
  • Conducts transactional negotiations focused on the commodity price and volume.
  • Manages credit requirements, contract terms, transportation capacity and contract administration to ensure contract terms are adhered to.
  • Tracks progress towards business plans and initiates action as required.
  • Manages commodity inventory price risk including industry purchases, on‑farm purchases, and in‑store stocks to ensure optimal profitability by managing working capital, basis and flat positions, futures positions, and the forward marketplace in both the cash and futures market.
  • Evaluates employee performance and makes recommendations to the manager on the hiring, promotion and discharge of employees.
  • Guide and mentor team members in accordance with department requirements to build and support a high performing team.
  • Performs other duties as required.
Skills/Experience Requirements:
  • Minimum five (5) years' experience in merchandising.
  • Post‑secondary Degree in Agriculture or Commerce / Business Administration.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience that result in the required level of knowledge skill and competence will be considered.
  • Demonstrated ability to take on and manage risk.
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with a broad range of internal and external contacts.
  • Effective negotiation skills.
  • Proven judgment, problem solving and decision‑making skills.
  • Proven persuasion and diplomacy skills.
  • Computer competent, with ability in the use of communications, spreadsheet and word processing applications within a Windows based operating environment.
