Job description

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health), patient and staff safety is a priority and a shared responsibility. The continuous improvement of quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

Position Overview

Reporting to the Manager or designate, the Mental Health Worker participates in providing client-focused treatment, rehabilitation, and support for persons with mental illness in a residential, community-based facility. The role involves promoting a safe, healthy, and non-threatening environment that fosters dignity and self-respect. The worker participates in planning, developing, implementing, delivering, and modifying clinical services by responding to identified client needs within program guidelines. Responsibilities include motivating, assisting, and instructing clients with activities of daily living, reporting on clients' conditions and reactions to medications, escorting clients to off-site programs, appointments, and events, and assessing clients' ability to assume self-care responsibilities.

Qualifications: Education, Training, and Experience
  1. Diploma in Community Social Services (e.g., Mental Health Worker, Community Health Worker, or Social Services Worker), including post-secondary education in counseling skills training.
  2. Knowledge of legislation such as the Mental Health Act and the Guardianship Act.
  3. Understanding of available programs, their interrelationships, and their role in community care delivery.
  4. Knowledge of psychosocial rehabilitation principles and a client-centred approach.
  5. Minimum of two years recent related experience working with persons with mental illness, including teaching life skills, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  6. Current Level C Basic Life Saving Certificate.
  7. Valid Class 5 vehicle license.
  8. Food Safe Certificate.
Skills and Abilities
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to develop and maintain therapeutic rapport with clients and utilize it to facilitate understanding of their illness and rehabilitation process.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proficiency in employing aggressive behaviour management techniques.
  • Judgment skills aligned with program philosophy, especially when supervisor is unavailable.
  • Valid BC Driver's License; ability to obtain a Class 4 Driver's License if required.
  • Physical ability to perform job duties.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
