Position Overview
Reporting to the Manager, Human Resources & Labour Relations, the Mental Health Counsellor will be stationed onsite with responsibility for providing specialized support and counseling to a diverse workforce. The role involves collaborating with onsite and community stakeholders to support employee mental health. The position is based at our Mary River Mine on a three-week in, three-week out rotation.
Main Accountabilities
- Identify and manage all onsite mental health emergency situations.
- Conduct assessments including intake, mental health status, crisis intervention, addictions, and psychosocial/psychoeducational assessments.
- Provide informal and formal mental health counseling services, including solution-focused therapy, debriefings, cognitive-behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, mindfulness-based counseling, and group therapy.
- Collaborate with service providers to enhance mental health services.
- Use trauma-informed and culturally sensitive approaches.
- Advocate for clients in accessing community resources.
- Maintain confidential records and documentation.
- Prepare regular reports.
- Perform risk assessments and monitor clients.
- Educate employees on mental health and reduce stigma (e.g., Mental Health Mondays).
- Provide mental health orientation and training for staff and management.
- Develop treatment plans in collaboration with other professionals.
- Assist clients in managing emotions through de-escalation strategies.
- Build relationships with community health resources.
- Assess clinical and psychosocial needs, urgency, and acuity.
- Collaborate with healthcare providers for ongoing care.
- Demonstrate adaptability and openness to change.
Main Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Counseling Psychology, Social Work, Nursing, or a related field.
- Master’s Degree in a similar field.
- At least 3 years of experience as a Mental Health Counsellor in healthcare or equivalent.
- Training in evidence-based therapies such as CBT, DBT, crisis, and trauma-informed care.
- Licensed with the relevant regulatory body and eligible for malpractice insurance.
- Understanding of indigenous culture and values in a regional context.
- Flexible working hours.
- Ability to work in person, virtually, or by phone.
- Strong leadership, motivation, and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of Inuktitut is an asset.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Confidentiality maintained at all times.
- Willingness to travel to Nunavut communities, often by small aircraft.
- Arctic experience is beneficial.
- Experience with Impact Benefits Agreements and community engagement is an asset.
- Experience in Fly-in/Fly-out environments is an asset.
- Knowledge of relevant legislation and community resources.
