Job summary

The Government of Nunavut is seeking a MHA Youth Program Facilitator in Iqaluit to assess community needs for children and youth and develop programs aimed at improving their well-being.

You will establish supportive relationships with youth and families to empower active participation in mental health wellness, reinforce strategies of the Department of Health, and work with the MHA team.

Qualifications

• Certificate in social services, child and/or youth, mental health or related field.
• One year of experience working in child and/or youth work, mental health or related field.

Responsibilities

• Providing general support and advocacy to help children and youth meet their needs by developing and facilitating community-based programs;
• Delivering programs for youth that focus on wellness themes, such as building healthy relationships, positive coping skills, effective communication, and social-emotional understanding;
• Visiting schools and youth centres to identify program needs and plan for their delivery;
• Supporting community Youth Group Councils by attending meetings, sharing resources, and co-facilitating programs or events when appropriate;
• Conducting information sessions for the community, including the schools;
• Working closely with the health care team and community organizations to promote mental health wellness amongst young Nunavummiut;
• Escorting low-risk clients to and from other communities or out-of-territory facilities when appropriate.

Reporting to the Mental Health and Addictions (MHA) Program Supervisor, the purpose of the MHA Youth Program Facilitator’s position is to determine community needs for children and youth and identify and provide programs designed to improve the well-being of young people. The MHA Youth Program Facilitator will establish supportive relationships with youth and their families with the goal of empowering them to actively participate in mental health wellness. This position will reinforce, practice and model the mental health strategies of the Department of Health as part of the MHA team.

The MHA Youth Program Facilitator’s main responsibilities, include, but are not limited to:

• Providing general support and advocacy to help children and youth meet their needs by developing and facilitating community-based programs;
• Delivering programs for youth that focus on wellness themes, such as building healthy relationships, positive coping skills, effective communication, and social-emotional understanding;
• Visiting schools and youth centres to identify program needs and plan for their delivery;

The knowledge, skills, and experience required for this job are usually obtained through a recognized:

• Certificate in social services, child and/or youth, mental health or related field;
• One (1) year of experience working in child and/or youth work, mental health or related field.

Assets Include

• A valid driver’s license;
• Current First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

This is a Highly Sensitive Position and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, along with a clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required..

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land,Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
