Job summary

Temiskaming Shores & Area Chamber of Commerce is seeking a Membership and Events Intern for a 52-week contract, 35 hours per week, with potential for permanent employment after completion. The role focuses on member development, events, communications, and community engagement in Temiskaming Shores, Ontario.

Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years or older and legally eligible to work in Canada.
  • Reside in Temiskaming Shores during the contract.

Responsibilities

  • Membership relations: recruit and onboard new members and communicate chamber services.
  • Marketing and promotion of events and services across platforms and to local media.
  • Event planning: coordinate venues, catering, decor, and AV for events.
  • Tourism, hospitality, and community relations within the Chamber and Tourism Information Centre.
  • Graphic design and advertising: create digital/print media and use social media for outreach.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

About the Company

The Temiskaming Shores & Area Chamber of Commerce is a regional hub for businesses to access resources, forge community connections, and receive support to improve the economy of our area. We serve member businesses through networking events, connections with professional development and funding, by offering cost-saving programs, and through other programs. Our large catchment area and location gives our Chamber a unique vision and mission, as we work for member businesses of a broad range of sizes, sectors, and cultural backgrounds.

Position Summary

We are seeking a motivated and eager professional to join our team in the role of a Membership and Events Intern.

Working with the Temiskaming Shores & Area Chamber of Commerce will provide a unique professional experience for the Membership and Events Intern to develop community relations and business support while learning about government relations and advocacy, event planning and execution, and media and communications skills in a broad range of platforms. This position will support the Chamber’s networking and education offerings to member businesses.

Key Responsibilities
  • Membership relations: This will include the recruitment and onboarding of new members to the Chamber. The intern will be well-versed in what services and benefits are provided by a Chamber of Commerce and will communicate those services to members.
  • Marketing and promotion of events and services: The intern will work across various platforms to prepare and distribute promotional material about Chamber events and services. The intern will regularly engage with local and regional media to share Chamber events, services, and initiatives. The intern will work with community partners to execute the Chamber mission and advocate for the needs of the membership.
  • Event planning. The intern will work with Chamber staff and volunteers to plan and execute events targeted to Chamber membership, or the broader community including booking locations, contracting caterers, decorating, and sound and lights professionals and ensuring all the details of a successful event are organized.
  • Tourism, hospitality, and community relations. Working in the Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Information Centre building, the intern will be a point of contact for locals and tourists looking for community information or access to services. The intern will direct solutions to community inquiries and encourage the public to patronize local businesses and tourism attractions.
  • Graphic design, marketing and advertising. The intern will prepare and distribute digital media, print media, and other content as needed to support their role at the Chamber. The intern will use social media to communicate Chamber services to the community.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
Required Qualifications
  • Candidate must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Candidate must be legally eligible to work in Canada and must reside in the area of Temiskaming Shores during the work contract.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bilingualism in French and English would be an asset in this position.
  • Experience in communications, graphic design, media relations, event planning, or related fields is an asset, but is not required for this position. Training will be provided.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, Publisher, and Access) and graphic design software (such as Publisher or Canva) are an asset to this position
  • Experience with website management, using social media as a marketing tool, or managing clients using a CRM are considered assets.
  • Strong skills in writing and verbal communication would be valuable in this role.

  • Salary: $38,500 / year
  • 2 weeks of vacation as well as holidays off
