Applications are now being accepted for Medical Laboratory Technologist. The Medical Laboratory Technologist interacts with the patient and other health care professionals in ways that ensure that the patient’s needs are met in a caring and professional manner, and in accordance with the legislation, regulation, bylaws and policies, which govern members of the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario. The successful applicant must be able to work Monday-Sunday, including holidays. The hours of work for this position are 0700-1500, 1500-2300, 0830-1630, and 2300-0700.

Job Functions

  • Adhere to policies and procedures established for the assigned department while supporting the Mission, Vision and Values of Erie Shores Healthcare
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the Regulated Health Professions Act 1991 (RHPA), and its requirements
  • Maintain the confidentiality of all patient information
  • Performs all duties with current and relevant professional, legal and ethical standards and evaluates outcomes according to those standards
  • Responsible for ongoing maintenance of competence by participating in quality monitoring programs, appropriate education and training, and for documenting such participation
  • Performs all duties with an understanding of and respect for the patients’ rights
  • Reports incidents of unsafe practice, incompetent activity or other professional misconduct of co-workers or other health care providers to the proper authorities as defined by law
  • Collaborates with all medical laboratory technologist and other health professionals to ensure the safe and effective delivery of service
  • Within the scope of practice defined by their certificate of registration, accepts responsibility for the consequences of their actions
  • Communicates effectively with patients, fellow laboratory technologists and other health care providers
  • Directs Medical Laboratory Assistants, Technical Assistants and student technologist within the confines of ethical and professional practice
  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the theoretical and technical elements of required procedures ensuring that correct protocol is followed
  • Uses problem-solving, independent judgment and decision making skills to evaluate the technical sufficiency’s of the investigation and their results
  • Correlates test data with normal and abnormal physiology, the individual, population interval and source of sample
  • Understands the relationship between quality, quantity, cost and the impact of a test on the patient, the laboratory and the health care system
  • Analyzes data for the purposes of quality control and verification of tests results
  • Understands the appropriate application of the knowledge and skills of the technologist in relation to other health professionals
  • Understands and applies continuous quality improvement in procedures related to test performance, related functions and the delivery of laboratory services
  • Collects patient information relevant to the test procedure or the validation of a test result
  • Initiates appropriate action when critical values are obtained
  • Evaluates results of quality control procedures and implements corrective action when outside acceptable limits
  • Recognizes, troubleshoots and documents equipment, instrument and reagent malfunction and initiates the proper remedial action in a timely manner
  • Reviews policy and procedures used in the delivery of laboratory services and recommends changes to improve the services provided
  • Perform any other relevant duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) Registration required
  • Hematology, Blood Bank, Chemistry experience preferred
  • Demonstrated phlebotomy skills, with the ability to draw blood from patients of all ages (Newborns – Adults)
  • Ability to work effectively within a collaborative team environment, and independently with minimal supervision
  • Evidence of sound organizational, problem solving and prioritization skills with ability to work well in a fast paced environment
  • Ability to be on call
  • Basic level of proficiency in use of computers and other office equipment
