Job Overview:
The Medical Lab Technician (Transfusion) is responsible for performing and providing compatibility tests for patients blood transfusion needs as per the established standard operating procedure. Effectively manages and utilizes the blood and blood product inventory. Assists with the preparation and collection of quality control/assurance data reports & performance of quality audits as assigned.
Qualifications:
Required:
Associate Degree in an accredited Medical Technology program or related science
Minimum of one (1) year of clinical lab experience or attendance at a school of Medical Technology required.
Preferred:
American Society for Clinical Pathology Certification ASCP or equivalent certification
Scheduling Requirements:
Weekend and Holiday rotation required
Essential Functions:
Demonstrates flexibility and initiative on the job
Demonstrates the ability to perform all relevant computer functions for the following: LIS and HIS programs related to Transfusion Services and the BBLIS, receive samples, result transfusion set-up orders, enter test results and enter all blood and components in the BBLIS.
Demonstrates the ability to perform and interpret the results of quality control tests and brings and discrepancy to the attention of the supervisor.
Demonstrates the ability to prepare components such as aliquoting Packed Red Cells, thawing Fresh Frozen plasma, pooling Cryoprecipitate and preparing multiple units of Platelets. Demonstrates the ability to irradiate and label blood & components correctly. This will be evident by the preparation taking only minimum amount of time so as not to delay patient care.
Demonstrates the proper handling of all patient samples by receiving samples in the correct computer program, recording the results in the BBLIS, recognizing and recording problems and seeking assistance when needed. Evaluates samples relative to the age of the patient.
Demonstrates the ability to resolve errors in the identification of patient samples within 10 minutes of recognition of the error. Resolution includes recording the appropriate information in the respective computer systems, verbally notifying the patient's nurse or designee and completing an Event Report.
Demonstrates the ability to perform tests correctly
Demonstrates the ability to perform ABO/Rh, Direct Coombs, antibody screening and compatibility testing correctly
Retains and expands knowledge by attaining at least 12 hours of continuing education per year through in-house and outside meetings and seminars
Practices safety and security as defined by hospital laboratory policies and procedures
Demonstrates a clear understanding and working knowledge of basic Blood Bank concepts as evidenced by the ability to interpret Blood group and Rh, antibody screening and uncomplicated panels.
Recognizes and evaluates results relative to the immune response expected for each age group.
