Medical Insurance Underwriter - Bilingual French and English

Department Overview

The Underwriting Department assesses mortality and morbidity risks for TD Life's Individual Insurance products and the Bank's Creditor Insurance program. The department aims to align underwriting practices with claims experience and enhance customer experience, managing high volumes in a fast-paced environment.

Job Responsibilities

1. Perform appropriate medical underwriting assessments and decisions based on plan limits and underwriting standards.
2. Review and evaluate detailed medical and non-medical risks, determine mortality ratings, and make final decisions.
3. Interpret MIB findings and determine necessary coding.
4. Negotiate with reinsurers regarding final decisions and ratings.
5. Support claims department and handle claim referrals.
6. Communicate underwriting decisions clearly and promptly to clients and physicians.
7. Ensure applications are processed according to TD guidelines and third-party agreements.
8. Maintain relationships with TD Insurance departments, bank departments, and reinsurers.
9. Monitor and uphold service and production standards.
10. Participate in ongoing education to stay current with medical trends.

Job Requirements

• Minimum of 5 years medical underwriting experience in life insurance or a health sciences degree/diploma.
• Fluent in French and English.
• Solid understanding of underwriting functions and company operations.
• Excellent communication, organizational, analytical, and computer skills.
• Ability to work independently and in teams.
• Experience in training junior underwriters is a plus.
