Job summary

The University of British Columbia in Vancouver seeks a Medical Geographer as a Research Assistant/Technician 3 to support epidemiology studies of inflammatory bowel disease and environmental determinants of disease.

Qualifications

• Preparing documents, including correspondence, posters, presentations, and quarterly reports.
• Supporting projects of the IBD Program as needed.
• Performing other related duties as required.

Job Summary

This Research Assistant position will provide research-oriented support to projects focused on understanding the epidemiology of Inflammatory Bowel Disease and environmental determinants of disease. The Research Assistant will assist with IBD research studies and other research related tasks to support the program's initiatives under the guidance and direction of Dr. K. Jacobson. Responsibilities will include working with IBD registries, heath administrative databases, assisting with data acquisition and analysis, assisting with REB protocol development and submissions, writing reports and manuscripts and assisting with writing grant applications. The research assistant will also provide assistance to trainees working in the IBD program.

Organizational Status

The Research Assistant will support the IBD Research Program's initiatives under the guidance and direction of Dr Jacobson.

Work Performed

• Assist with REB protocol development and submission

The Research Assistant will work under the guidance and direction of the Dr Jacobson.

Minimum Qualifications

• Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one's own.
• Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one's own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree in health sciences or related field will be considered a major asset.
• Expertise in geo-spatial mapping.
• Fluent with data validation and analysis activities.
• Ability to effectively use MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
• High degree of computer literacy with ability to use word processing, spreadsheet, internet and electronic mail applications (on PC and Mac OS) at an intermediate level.
• Experience with project evaluation, database management using software such as SAS and R, online literature searches and web-based applications an asset.
• Ability to take and transcribe accurate meeting minutes and follow up on action items with ease.
• Superior organizational and time management skills.
• Effective scientific writing, oral and written communication, interpersonal, and multitasking skills.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, for both academic and community audiences.
• Ability to work both independently and within a team environment. Attentive to detail, with the ability to work quickly and accurately.
• Ability to exercise tact and discretion when handling sensitive and/or confidential matters.
