Valbruna ASW Inc., The Premier Specialty Steel-making Facility Located In Welland, ON, Has An Immediate Requirement For The Following Position Within Our Engineering Department

Mechanical Technologist

Valbruna ASW Inc. operates a dynamic and versatile facility and has a long and storied history in the steel-making business, with roots in Welland dating back to 1918. Recent upgrades to equipment combined with improvements in efficiency and production flexibility have placed us among the premier specialty steel producers in North America. The Mechanical Technologist is responsible for providing engineering and administrative support to the Department and will provide assistance on a variety of small projects. This role will ensure the efficient and safe functioning of equipment and systems through technical problem-solving and hands-on support.

Reporting to the Maintenance and Engineering Manager, the Mechanical Technologist’s duties and responsibilities include some of the following:

  • Create accurate and detailed design sketches, layouts, and drawings to support project requirements
  • Interpret, update, and verify technical blueprints ad schematics for accuracy and compliance
  • Utilize computer-aided design (CAD) software and drafting systems to develop and modify drawings and models
  • Conduct detailed reviews and analysis of drawings to ensure adherence to specifications, measurements, and standards
  • Support the development of technical documentation, including specifications, procedures, and manuals
  • Prepare comprehensive technical reports and requests for quotes
  • Organize and maintain engineering documentation and files in line with company standards and quality systems
  • Perform reverse engineering on components, assemblies, and equipment to support product improvements and documentation
  • Contribute to the success of ongoing engineering projects through collaborative work and technical input
  • Carry out additional tasks and responsibilities as assigned, ensuring completion within required timelines and continuous support of the Engineering Department

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications and attributes:

  • Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related technical discipline
  • Previous industrial experience in a steel mill or similar heavy manufacturing environment would be considered an asset
  • Highly proficient in AutoCAD, Inventor and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Proven ability to read, interpret, and revise technical blueprints and engineering drawings
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information clearly
  • Exhibits strong interpersonal skills
  • Self-motivated and resourceful, with strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to tasks
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and committed to maintaining high standards of accuracy and safety
  • A willingness to continuously learn and participate in hands-on field work when necessary
  • Demonstrates the ability to work in a fast-paced, lean environment where adaptability, innovation, and hard work are valued above all else
