Mechanical Project Engineer – Gold Mining Company – Northern Ontario (Hybrid)
An exciting opportunity is available for an Mechanical Project Engineer to join the Capital Projects team supporting one of Canada's largest gold mining operations. This is an independent contractor opportunity, with a target start date of approximately mid-October 2026.
Reporting directly to the Lead Mechanical Project Engineer, this is a contributor position responsible for the day-to-day coordination and ownership of assigned mechanical engineering packages within major mining and processing projects.
The Mechanical Project Engineer will work closely with engineering consultants and multidisciplinary project stakeholders to coordinate design development, review engineering deliverables, assess constructability, prepare scopes of work, and support assigned mechanical packages through project execution.
The successful candidate will act as the package owner for assigned mechanical engineering packages, while the Lead Mechanical Project Engineer maintains overall oversight of mechanical packages across the broader project team. The Mechanical Project Engineer will work closely with the Lead on key engineering decisions and escalates significant technical or execution roadblocks as required.
This is an individual contributor position with no direct reports or people-management responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as the package owner for assigned mechanical engineering packages, coordinating engineering activities, deliverables, interfaces, and stakeholders throughout project execution.
- Manage the day-to-day coordination of external engineering consultants responsible for assigned mechanical packages.
- Coordinate design development and ensure engineering consultants deliver documentation in accordance with project requirements, scope, schedule, and applicable standards.
- Develop and review mechanical concepts for pumps, piping systems, material handling equipment, HVAC, tanks, utilities, and other process-support equipment.
- Review consultant-produced engineering drawings, specifications, calculations, datasheets, P&IDs, 3D models, technical reports, scopes of work, and other engineering deliverables.
- Review mechanical designs from a constructability perspective, identifying potential execution challenges and ensuring proposed designs can be practically and safely constructed, installed, accessed, and maintained in the field.
- Lead and participate in design reviews and constructability reviews, coordinating comments and required revisions with engineering consultants and project stakeholders.
- Prepare and develop Scopes of Work (SOWs) for engineering consultants and contractors associated with assigned mechanical packages.
- Coordinate with multiple internal and external stakeholders, including engineering, construction, operations, maintenance, procurement, environmental, project controls, consultants, and contractors.
- Coordinate engineering interfaces between mechanical packages and other disciplines, including civil, structural, electrical, process, and piping.
- Help evaluate technical alternatives ahead of detailed engineering, comparing equipment and layout options.
- Monitor engineering consultant progress and assigned package deliverables against established project schedules and requirements.
- Support procurement activities associated with assigned packages, including technical scope development, clarification of technical requirements, equipment selection, and vendor/technical bid evaluations.
- Participate in value engineering, project risk assessments, and technical reviews to identify opportunities, constraints, missing information, design conflicts, and potential project risks.
- Support construction activities by responding to technical queries, reviewing RFIs, submittals, and field/design change requests, and assisting with the resolution of field engineering and constructability issues.
- Coordinate consultant and contractor interfaces during project execution to ensure engineering requirements are effectively communicated and implemented.
- Support assigned packages through construction, commissioning, turnover, documentation, and closeout as required, including QA/QC activities such as inspections, NCR reviews, and ITP input.
- Support mechanical infrastructure scopes involving conveyors, shaker screens, paste plant systems, building envelopes, and other heavy industrial mechanical systems.
- Support the transition of packages from concept / study / FEED into detailed engineering.
- Work closely with Project Controls and other project team members to monitor scope, schedule, cost, progress, risks, changes, and key deliverables associated with assigned packages.
- Ensure assigned engineering work complies with applicable regulations, project standards, engineering best practices, and site health and safety requirements.
- Maintain regular communication with the Lead Mechanical Project Engineer regarding package status, technical decisions, risks, and execution challenges.
- Escalate significant technical issues, design concerns, constructability challenges, or project roadblocks to the Lead Mechanical Project Engineer and work collaboratively toward resolution.
