Job summary

Black & McDonald Limited in Vancouver invites applications for a Mechanical Estimator. You will interact with engineers, architects, owners, and subcontractors to prepare economic feasibility studies and cost adjustments.

Qualifications

• 2–3 years of estimating experience in the commercial construction industry is preferable.
• Completion of a Degree or Diploma in Construction Engineering Technology/Construction Management is an asset.
• Proficient with recognized estimating software and MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).

Responsibilities

• Prepare estimates of cost of materials, labour and equipment for construction projects.
• Advise on tendering procedures and analyze tenders for awards.
• Coordinate price packages with suppliers, subcontractors, and designers.
• Prepare and maintain cost monitoring, reporting systems and procedures.

Black & McDonald’s BC team is growing! If you are an analytical and collaborative professional searching for the opportunity to build a solid foundation for your career, this position is for you. The Mechanical Estimator is located in Vancouver and reports directly to the Senior Mechanical Estimator.

The Mechanical Estimator will analyze costs and prepare work take-offs and estimates on mechanical projects. The successful candidate will provide technical and administrative support to project operations with emphasis on estimating, reporting and monitoring progress, planning, scheduling, and handling project change.

• Prepare estimates of cost of materials, labour and equipment for construction projects based on contract bids, quotations, schematic drawings and specifications.
• Advise on tendering procedures, examine and analyze tenders, recommend tender awards and participate in negotiations.
• Establish and maintain tendering process, set up cost monitoring, reporting systems and procedures.
• Coordinates price packages with suppliers, subcontractors, owners, designers and architects regarding tenders.
• Participates in site review, tender review, tender hand-off, project closing and operational/sector meetings with the Senior Estimator and Project Managers and Division Manager as required
• Prepare and maintain a directory of suppliers, contractors and subcontractors
• Liaise, consult and communicate with engineers, architects, owners, contractors and subcontractors, and prepare economic feasibility studies on changes and adjustments to cost estimates.
• Conduct material and equipment purchasing for secured jobs.
• Co-ordinate various small projects.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

• Completion of a Degree or Diploma in Construction Engineering Technology/Construction Management is an asset
• 2-5 years of experience as a qualified tradesperson within the commercial construction industry may substitute for education requirements.

WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

• 2-3 years of estimating experience in the commercial construction industry is preferable

SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

• Proficient knowledge and strong understanding of established Construction best practices
• Excellent organization and time management skills
• Proficient with recognized estimating software is an asset
• Proficient user of MS Office Suite applications including Word, Excel, and Outlook
• Willing and able to travel within the Greater Vancouver area for site visits as needed
• Clean Class 5 BC Drivers’ license and abstract

The expected salary range for this role is between $70,000 & $80,000. The starting salary will be based on several factors such as the successful candidate’s qualifications, including but not limited to education and experience. Salary is one component of Black & McDonald’s total rewards package.
