Job description

The Mirillion Group has been engaged by a well-established Canadian engineering consultancy to identify a Manager, Mechanical Engineering for their Toronto office. Our client delivers mechanical engineering across commercial, institutional, industrial, municipal, and infrastructure markets, and is looking for a senior leader to take ownership of the practice — its technical output, its people, and its continued growth.

This is a hands-on leadership role for an engineer who still enjoys the technical work as much as the management of it. The position reports to a senior executive within the client's buildings and infrastructure group.

Client details are shared with candidates during our initial conversation. Applications are handled in confidence and nothing is forwarded without your consent.

Mandate
  • Build, direct, and mentor a multidisciplinary group of mechanical engineers, designers, and technical specialists, with accountability for their growth and performance.
  • Set project staffing plans and deploy resources so that milestones, deliverables, and client commitments are consistently met.
  • Author and roll out internal design guidelines, engineering procedures, and department standards that keep quality and efficiency consistent from project to project.
Technical Direction
  • Own the design, technical review, and sign-off of HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, and process mechanical systems on building and infrastructure assignments across Canada.
  • Direct the design and commissioning of sophisticated building automation and control systems.
  • Take technical ownership of fire protection design and commissioning across wet and dry sprinkler systems, standpipes, deluge and chemical suppression systems, and fire pump installations.
  • Lead the sizing and design of large-scale standby power generation.
  • Guide the design of specialized odour control installations.
  • Provide technical direction through every project stage — from feasibility and concept through detailed design, construction support, and commissioning.
  • Carry out QA/QC review of engineering deliverables to confirm conformance with applicable codes, internal standards, and current industry practice.
  • Coordinate closely with structural, electrical, civil, process, environmental, and architectural colleagues so that deliverables align and design and construction phases run cleanly.
Business Growth
  • Contribute to proposal writing, work planning, and the preparation of fee estimates for modelling and related engineering scopes.
  • Serve as a point of contact for clients, vendors, contractors, utilities, and regulatory bodies as part of business development, and represent the practice within industry associations and technical bodies.
  • Track market direction, emerging technology, sustainability practice, and regulatory change, translating what you find into innovation and compliance opportunities.
  • Feed into annual business planning, revenue projections, utilization goals, and the longer-term growth strategy for the mechanical group.
Technical Expertise Sought
  • Computational fluid dynamics modelling, including 3D multiphase, transient, and thermal simulation.
  • Design work governed by ASHRAE 62.1, ASHRAE 90.1, Ontario SB-10, and LEED.
  • Practical whole-building energy modelling using eQUEST, EnergyPlus, or IES.
  • Heat and energy recovery approaches such as wastewater-source recovery and lake-source district cooling.
  • Air dispersion and acoustic modelling, associated calculations, and the approvals that follow from them.
  • CSA B139 and B149 applications, including fuel systems serving standby generation, cogeneration plants, and transit fleet fuelling facilities.
What Our Client Requires
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario.
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited program.
  • 15+ years of progressively senior experience within an engineering consultancy.
  • Demonstrated success leading engineering teams and multidisciplinary project delivery.
  • Working understanding of construction sequencing and constructability.
  • Experience reviewing complex construction staging and sequencing, including temporary works and commissioning.
  • A consulting skill set: delivering to schedule and budget, writing winning proposals, and developing client relationships.
  • Strong technical writing ability, with a track record of well-constructed reports and technical documentation.
  • Excellent spoken and written English.
  • Collaborative working style and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Current on industry trends and best practice.
