About Lumentum

At Lumentum, we're building the tech behind the world's fastest networks and most advanced systems. Our optical and photonic solutions power everything from AI and cloud computing to data centers, telecom, and advanced manufacturing. We're a global team of innovators working where light meets technology, solving big challenges that keep the world connected and moving forward. If shaping the future of connectivity excites you, you'll fit right in.

Job Summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic student to work in the R&D process group within the Advanced Packaging and Integration Team to contribute to the development of our Optical Circuit Switch (OCS), which brings a new level of scalability, latency, and power efficiency to cloud-scale and AI/ML data center networks. Built on field-proven Lumentum micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) technology with over a trillion mirror operating hours, the OCS establishes direct optical paths between endpoints—eliminating intermediate packet processing and optical-electrical-optical (OEO) conversion. The result is dramatically lower latency, higher signal integrity, and significant reductions in network power for large GPU clusters. This is an excellent opportunity to work in a truly multi-disciplinary environment and to learn about the product development process at Lumentum. In this position, students will be engaged in the development and execution of package assembly, integration, and sealing processes involving materials science, thermal design and process control considerations. This position also offers the opportunity to contribute to the process improvements with tools, standard operating procedures and process automation, enhanced data collection/storage and examination as well as R&D analysis tools. Students will collaborate with other Engineering teams throughout their work term, including Hermetics and Advanced Packaging and Integration, Manufacturing, and Mechanical and Software teams. This will give them a broad overview of the many disciplines involved in the design of our products. The role is very flexible in projects and focus areas, which will allow students to have some control over what they get out of this experience.

The Opportunity
  • 8 month term (preferred): January 2027 to August 2027
  • Up to 16 months will be considered
  • Pay Range: $24-35/hr
Key Responsibilities
  • Work with the engineering team to understand key factors that affect the manufacturing process and use DOE to develop an experimental plan to study them.
  • Improve and develop tools, jigs and fixtures to increase the manufacturability of the products.
  • Analyze data to show the trend of the impact of key parameters on the process quality.
  • Keep well-organized records of experimental results and summaries of the progress and standard documentation.
  • Working in R&D lab and clean room environments with industrial machinery.
  • Share progress and outcome with stakeholders for feedback and continuous improvements, as well as providing regular progress updates and reports.
  • Receive basic training before working on any project and collaborate with other team members to learn the details.
  • Encouraged to come up with creative ideas to improve the processes.
What We're Looking For
  • 3rd or 4th year: Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Nanotech Engineering, and Engineering Physics are preferred, and candidates from other Engineering or Science disciplines will also be considered.
  • Candidates must be currently enrolled in a recognized Canadian post-secondary institution
Skills
  • Highly motivated and energetic with a strong desire to learn.
  • Mechanical design skills are required, able to use SolidWorks or SolidEdge 3D mechanical design tools.
  • Previous experience and demonstrated ability in mechanical designing, conducting and analyzing experiments and problem solving.
  • Knowledgeable with lean manufacturing techniques.
  • Some understanding of using and troubleshooting industrial machinery is valuable.
  • Familiarity with Python, computer vision, and AI is considered a strong asset.
Key Competencies
  • Passionate and driven
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to understand and analyze experimental data.
