Mechanical Engineer - Thermal Management

Wärtsilä's Energy Business is looking for a Mechanical Engineer - Thermal Management for the Energy Storage & Optimization business. The role will be part of the hardware engineering team. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter that can work both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team. The candidate should thrive in a fast-paced, constantly changing environment while the industry and company go through substantial growth.

Preferred location for this position is Wärtsilä's location in Scarborough, ON (Toronto Area). The selected candidate will be required to work onsite.

Main Responsibilities:

1. Develop and optimize battery module thermal management system designs to meet specific requirements, such as energy density, power output, thermal management, and safety.
2. Design & develop mechanical, electrical, and thermal components supporting battery modules, such as busbars, cooling systems, and enclosures.
3. Collaborate with battery module and cooling component and fluid handling component suppliers to ensure compatibility and integration in system design.
4. Collaborate with manufacturing teams to develop and optimize assembly processes, tooling, and fixtures.
5. Support the transition from prototype to mass production, including pilot builds/testing and manufacturing ramp-up activities.
6. Manage suppliers and projects to ensure timely program deliverables within budget.
7. Develop various battery system thermal control test experiments, document procedures, and perform the tests in a lab environment.
8. Conduct CFD analysis using Ansys Fluent to investigate innovative thermal cooling solutions for battery systems.
9. Digital Twin development of energy storage system in Matlab software environment - ECM and thermal model generation (1-dimensional fluid circuit or Rough Order of Magnitude - ROM).
10. Design mechanical enclosures, racks, parts, and/or features intended to be used in the energy storage industry.
11. Develop and document test procedures, assembly and installation instructions, and other document and system documentation.
12. Collaborate in a team environment and/or take charge of opportunities to develop optimal solutions for customers and development programs.
13. Support manufacturing and system deployment activities by collaborating to resolve issues and ensure products and systems are delivered to specification.

Minimum Experience and Educational Requirements:

1. MS degree required, PhD desired
2. 3-5 years of product development and mechanical engineering experience
3. Experience with Ansys/Fluent required, PTC Creo/Windchill is a plus
4. Experience with energy storage systems is preferred
5. Strong understanding of electrochemical energy storage principles and lithium-ion battery technologies
6. Knowledge of heat transfer and thermodynamics
7. Experience solving customer's needs and issues
8. History of maintaining positive working relationships with customers, peers, subordinates, vendors, shop, and office in a fast-paced environment
9. Excellent communication skills
10. Team player attitude internally and externally
11. Entrepreneurial drive with hunter mindset
12. Willing to travel up to 20% of the time
